The Vanity is a Group 3 race run at the famous Flemington Racecourse. In 2024 there were officially two editions with the first held February during the annual Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival before the move to the spring on VRC Derby Day.

The Peter Moody & Katherine Coleman trained former Rockhampton based filly Sheza Alibi ($2.20F) showed her class when coming from behind a wall of horses to get through the gap thanks to a gun ride by Luke Nolen and draw clear to head the 2025 The Vanity results by 1.75 lengths on the line.

The 1400m set weights plus penalties event is open only to three-year-old fillies and offers $240,000 in total prize money.

It was one of the support races on the Black Caviar Lightning Day program that is headlined by the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) for sprinters before moving from the autumn to the spring to join the bumper Flemington Derby Day line-up on the opening Melbourne Cup Carnival meeting. 

Fillies in The Vanity Stakes field were previously first-up for the autumn and traditionally went on to contest other races for their age and sex such as the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) on Newmarket Handicap Day.

Solicit (2014) and Barb Raider (2022) are the latest fillies to complete The Vanity – Kewney Stakes double before The Vanity changed dates from February to the spring. 

The best fillies out of The Vanity may have previously taken on the boys in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m). 

Recent Australian Guineas winners to come out of The Vanity include Shamrocker (4th in 2011) and Mosheen (2nd in 2012). In 2019 The Vanity winner Amphitrite went on to run third next start in the Australian Guineas.

The 2022 The Vanity form was franked with the winner Barb Raider going on to run second in both the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) and Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) that year.

The second 2024 edition of The Vanity served as a potential lead-up to the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield in mid-November before that Group 1 mile event moved to join the Caulfield Cup Day card in 2025.  

The 2025 The Vanity ran at Flemington on Saturday November 1, 2025 as part of the VRC Derby Day line-up during the Melbourne Cup Carnival and saw the talented Sheza Alibi ($2.20F) overcome heavy traffic to charge through late and salute for the punters.

The Vanity History

The Vanity has been run and won since 1987 and won by some classy fillies over the years including subsequent Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed (2011) and Solicit (2014). Originally run as a Listed race it was upgraded to its current Group 3 status in 2000.

Along with Flemington it has taken place at Sandown Racecourse (1997) and Moonee Valley (2007).

The race distance has changed several times, which has affected the winning times.

There were officially two editions of The Vanity in 2024 with the autumn edition in February won by Grinzinger Belle before the race moved to the spring season on Derby Day for the second edition in early November when Zeitung was successful.
