The Vamos Stakes is a Group 3 race run at Launceston Racecourse in February during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
The Vamos Stakes is a Group 3 race for fillies and mares run at Launceston Racecourse each February during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
Held on the same day as the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m), the Vamos Stakes is run over 1400m and offers $150,000 in total prize money.
The Launceston Group 3 is contested under weight-for-age conditions by field dominated by local Tasmanian-trained fillies and mares coming off a run in a race like the Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m) run at Hobart a fortnight earlier.
In 2016 I Love It backed up from a second in the Bow Mistress to win the Vamos Stakes, while in 2017 Lyuba ran second in both races. In 2019 the Bow Mistress was won by the previous year’s Vamos Stakes winner Life On The Wire, who also placed third to Twitchy Frank in the 2019 Vamos Stakes results. Most recently, Take The Sit improved on a lead-up eighth in the Bow Mistress to score an upset 2022 Vamos Stakes win at $14.
The best out of the Vamos Stakes field may head to Adelaide for a shot at the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in the winter, a race the 2016 Vamos Stakes winner I Love It finished third to Precious Gem in. I Love It also returned in the Vamos Stakes of 2017 to finish third on the back of her Bow Mistress third in the same year.
The 2021 Vamos Stakes winner Still A Star went on to run in Melbourne’s $5 million The All-Star Mile that autumn and also franked the form with a Group 2 Rose of Kingston Stakes victory at Flemington over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The Vamos Stakes 2023 took place Launceston Racecourse on Wednesday February 22, 2023 and was won in an upset by the Julie Richards-trained Jaja Chaboogie at blow out odds of 25/1.

Mark Ganderton’s in-form six-year-old is building to something big and has been excellent her last three out finishing in the money and flying under the radar. Last time out she was third at 30/1 in the Group 3 Bow Mistress at Hobart under one and a half lengths beaten, and she looks value again as a forgotten runner in the markets at double-figures. She never runs a bad race and has a strong record at the Launceston track (9:2-2-3). She needs to extend to run out a strong 1400m not having won over further than 1150m, but with plenty left last time out think she can surprise a few again.
The Vamos Stakes field is released by Tas Racing on the Friday before the race takes place on a Wednesday afternoon in late February as part of Launceston Cup Day.
The official 2023 Vamos Stakes field and barriers will be published in full below.
The Vamos Stakes 2023 final field features a capacity line-up of fillies and mares including Sirene Stryker coming off a third in the Group 3 Bow Mistress and runner-up in the same key lead-up Embeller from the Warrnambool stables of Tom Dabernig.

Since then notable Vamos Stakes winners include triple champion Lady Lynette (2009 & 2011-12) and I Love It (2016). The race gained Group 3 status in 2014 and continues to attract better gallopers each season.
