Vamos Stakes News
The Vamos Stakes is a Group 3 race for fillies and mares run at Launceston Racecourse each February during the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
Held on the same day as the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m), the Vamos Stakes is run over 1400m and offers $150,000 in total prize money.
The Launceston Group 3 is contested under weight-for-age conditions by field dominated by local Tasmanian-trained fillies and mares coming off a run in a race like the Group 3 Bow Mistress Trophy (1200m) run at Hobart a fortnight earlier and now known as the Mystic Journey Stakes.
In 2016 I Love It backed up from a second in the Bow Mistress to win the Vamos Stakes, while in 2017 Lyuba ran second in both races. In 2019 the Bow Mistress was won by the previous year’s Vamos Stakes winner Life On The Wire, who also placed third to Twitchy Frank in the 2019 Vamos Stakes results.
Most recently, Take The Sit improved on a lead-up eighth in the Bow Mistress to score an upset 2022 Vamos Stakes win at $14, while the 2024 Vamos Stakes winner Megamea came off a third in the Bow Mistress renamed that year as the Mystic Journey Stakes.
The best out of the Vamos Stakes field may head to Adelaide for a shot at the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville in the winter, a race the 2016 Vamos Stakes winner I Love It finished third to Precious Gem in. I Love It also returned in the Vamos Stakes of 2017 to finish third on the back of her Bow Mistress third in the same year.
The 2021 Vamos Stakes winner Still A Star went on to run in Melbourne’s $5 million The All-Star Mile that autumn and also franked the form with a Group 2 Rose of Kingston Stakes victory at Flemington over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The Vamos Stakes 2024 took place Launceston Racecourse on Wednesday February 28, 2024 as part of Ladbrokes Launceston Cup Day and was narrowly won by the Luke Oliver-trained Megamea ($7.50).

- To Win: #4 Yellow Sam ($2.60 at time of publish) – BET NOW
I’m backing Yellow Sam, the well-deserved and firming favorite. This Lindsey Smith-trained Ready For Victory mare is on a hot streak, aiming for a third consecutive win. She delivered a powerful victory in the Group 3 Mystic Journey Stakes (1200m) at Hobart and excels over the 1400m distance. Despite this being her first Launceston assignment, her recent form, including a win over 1400m carrying 61kg in Victoria, makes her a strong contender for jockey Fred Kersley.
