The Cameron Handicap is a Group 3 event held at Newcastle Racecourse in mid-September on Newcastle Gold Cup Day as a lead-up to the Epsom Handicap.
The Cameron Handicap is a Group 3 race conducted over 1500m during the Newcastle Gold Cup Racing Carnival each September.
Held at Newcastle Racecourse on a Friday in mid-September, the Cameron Handicap is worth $250,000 in total prize money as of 2023. The Cameron Handicap is held under open handicap conditions and usually attracts a fairly commendable field. Held on Newcastle Gold Cup Day the event usually draws horses from local and Sydney-based stables.
The Cameron Handicap is part of the two day Newcastle Spring Carnival, which also features the Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) and Tibbie Stakes (1400m).
Horses often seek to contend the Cameron Handicap following successful runs in other races held at Newcastle. The Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) is another lead up race for Sydney horses. Some Sydney horses might seek to incorporate the Cameron Handicap into their spring campaigns and make the two hour journey up for the race.
The Cameron Handicap winner is exempt from ballot for the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) held at Randwick the following month and Excellerator (2002) was the last to do the double.
In 2020 Rock successfully defended his Cameron Handicap title and went on to run third in that year’s Group 1 Kennedy Cantala during the Melbourne Cup Carnival at Flemington.
The 2021 Cameron Handicap form was franked with the third-placed mare Duais returning the following autumn to complete the Group 1 Australian Cup – Tancred Stakes interstate double in 2022.
The 2023 Cameron Handicap ran on Friday September 15, 2023 as part of the Newcastle Gold Cup Day card and was won in explosive fashion by the fast finishing Chris Waller-trained Democracy Manifest ($5).

Stay tuned for our insider Cameron Handicap 2023 Tips on the spring carnival showdown this September.
Quality edition of the Cameron Handicap with plenty of good horses resuming or in the early stages of their spring bids. Happy to stick with the current favourite Skyman from the Waller stable who is second-up here with the 59kg top-weight. The eight-year-old import may have the heavy kilos, but his first-up second to Pericles in Randwick’s Group 2 Tramway Stakes was eye-catching. Brett Prebble retains the ride, extra distance suits, can improve on his first-up run and win here.
The official Cameron Handicap Final Field & Barrier Draw is announced on the Wednesday of race week and attracts quality middle-distance sprinters coming off lead-up runs in earlier spring events including the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick a fortnight earlier or the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) in late August.
Democracy Manifest (10th in 2023) was the last Tramway Stakes graduate to win the Cameron Handicap.
The 2023 Cameron Handicap field features a strong line-up of middle-distance spring hopefuls led in betting by the Chris Waller-trained top-weight Skyman coming off a Group 2 Tramway second fresh at Randwick.

The Cameron Handicap was inaugurated in 1950 and has continued to grow in prize money and prestige over the decades. The race is named after James George Cameron, who was born in Newcastle to a very large family. He built Cameron’s Family Hotel in Broadmeadow, a home on Cameron’s Hill and purchased land nearby the racecourse. Tibbie, after whom the Tibbie Stakes is named, was part-owned by Cameron. James George Cameron served the Newcastle Jockey Club as president for 25 years and was instrumental in the construction of Newcastle Racecourse.
The Cameron Handicap was a listed race until the 2005 edition ran as a Group 3 event for the first time. It has remained at that grade since. In 2011, the distance was changed to the current 1500m.
In 2020 Rock made history becoming the first back-to-back Cameron Handicap winner since Romantic Dream (1976 & 1979) having also won the event in 2019.
Notable Cameron Handicap winners include Luskin Star (1977), Cheval Cavalier (1990), Court’s In Session (2006), and Toydini (2013).
In 2023 the Chris Waller-trained Democracy Manifest came from last to first to win the Cameron Handicap in a new track record time of 1 minute 28.71 seconds.
