The La Trice Classic is a Group 3 race for fillies & mares run at Ascot Racecourse as part of the summer’s Perth Cup Day meeting.

Run over 1800m the staying showdown offers $150,000 in total prize money and is a set weights plus penalties event. Perth Cup Day currently takes place during the first week of the New Year and features a number of feature races including the Group 2 $500,000 Perth Cup (2400m). The La Trice Classic is the other Group status race on the program and attracts a class line-up of female gallopers.

Fillies and mares in the La Trice Classic field have a number of lead-up races available to them during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival including the Listed Starstruck Classic (1600m) held a fortnight before over mile or the Group 3 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m) from mid-December. Dance Music (2021) followed by Beret (2022) are the latest runners to complete the Starstruck Classic – La Trice Classic double.

The race is traditionally the last of the campaign for the runners.

The La Trice Classic 2023 runs at Ascot Racecourse on Sunday January 1, 2023 as part of Perth’s New Year’s Day race card.

2023 La Trice Classic Field

The La Trice Classic field attracts a smart field of locally-trained fillies and mares chasing a summer Group win before heading out to the paddock or dropping down in grade for a January run.

The Jungle Dawn and Jungle Mist Classic races held at Ascot during November earlier in the Perth Summer Racing Carnival make nice lead-ups into the La Trice Classic field on Perth Cup Day.

The official 2023 La Trice Classic field & barriers are due out the week of the race and will be published below as soon as released by Perth Racing.

La Trice Classic History

The La Trice Classic was first contested in 2003 and won by Fortune Streak. Since then some nice types have taken out the summer showdown including Belle Bizarre (2006), Impressive Jeuney (2009) and Elite Belle (2014).

The event started as a Listed race before gaining its current Group 3 status in 2014. It has been held as part of the Perth Cup Day card since 2011. The race was not run in 2012 and two 2008 editions of the La Trice Classic took place, one in December and one in January. There are also two 2016 editions of the La Trice Classic (January & December), leading to no 2017 running with the next edition taking place in January of 2018.
