Lindermann reminded punters exactly why he remains one of Australia’s toughest and most reliable weight-for-age performers, powering home to claim victory in the 2026 Chelmsford Stakes results at Randwick on Saturday and delivering a commanding victory as the favourite and defending champion.

The seven-year-old Lonhro gelding, already a Rosehill Guineas winner and multiple Group 2 champion, bounced back sharply from a below-par first-up run finishing ninth to his star stablemate Autumn Glow in the Winx Stakes to relish the rise in trip and salute for the favourite backers in the Group 2 $300,000 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) for the second year running.

Rolling forward under Nash Rawiller and controlling the mile from the front, Lindermann kicked clear to score by 1¾ lengths over Ceolwulf ($3.60), with stablemate Fangirl ($3.30) finishing a brave third to round out this year’s Chelmsford Stakes trifecta in near market order.

Lindermann handed Waller his incredible ninth win in the event and third on the trot become the first back-to-back Chelmsford Stakes winner since the stable’s 2013-14 dual champ Hawkspur.

Waller was full of praise for both horse and rider after the win.

“Nash at his best, Lindermann at his best,” he told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“He came through that first-up run which had a frantic pace and bounced back today.

“He has his confidence back now.”

Waller also confirmed Fangirl’s run was likely her last, noting her incredible longevity at the top level.

“She was gallant but nowhere near her best… I would say she has run her last race but that is a relief she has pulled up well because she has been so good for so long,” he said of the eight-year-old daughter of Sebring who will retire with over $11 million in earnings.

Rawiller, who has partnered Lindermann through several of his biggest victories, was thrilled to see the gelding return to peak form.

“He is in the prime of his life really,” he said.

“He’s just been hanging there waiting for a few of those Fangirl’s to retire!”

The champion jockey added that Lindermann’s recent procedure during his spell had clearly helped him regain his spark.

“Today will give him a lot more confidence. He enjoyed that — it was just a nice working gallop for him,” he added.

The race unfolded exactly as expected, with Lindermann using his trademark cruising speed to take up the lead and stack the field before sprinting sharply off the bend.

“That’s him,” Rawiller said.

“He’s got that good cruising speed and he kicks off that, and only bloody champions run him down — a few times!”

Waller will now weigh up the next step in Lindermann’s spring campaign, with the Group 2 $1 million 7 Stakes (1600m) back at the track and trip in two weeks presenting a logical but challenging option.

“I’m not sure where to go next… we will weigh everything up and see what is best for him,” he said.

Behind the winner, Ceolwulf lost no admirers with a powerful finish from the back, while Fangirl produced another honest performance despite Waller confirming her retirement discussions are imminent.

Several beaten jockeys were upbeat about their mounts, including Chad Schofield, who said Ceolwulf “ripped home late” and is “very happy” with the horse’s progression, and Zac Lloyd, who noted Soul Of Spain is “right on track for his target races,” despite finishing second-last.

For Lindermann, the Chelmsford Stakes win adds yet another black-type success to a glittering résumé that already includes the Rosehill Guineas, Hill Stakes, Craven Plate, and a previous Chelmsford victory.

With more than $5.2 million in prizemoney and his best form seemingly back, the Lonhro gelding shapes as a major force heading deeper into the Sydney spring.
