The Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes – is a Group 3 status race currently run at Ladbrokes Park Hillside at Sandown in early February during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.

A middle-distance sprint race run over 1300m (increased from 1200m in 2023) the set weights plus penalties clash is open to mares aged four-years-old and above, and offers $200,000 in total prize  money. The Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes was previously held on CF Orr Stakes Day in mid-February. Ahead of the 2023 edition however it has moved a week earlier and is now on the same race card as the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) for two-year-olds.

Mares may come into the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes field via an earlier summer run in Melbourne and a likely next-up target is the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) back at the track on Blue Diamond Stakes Day. Tuscan Sling (2016) is the latest mare officially listed as winning the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes – Mannerism Stakes double having been awarded the latter after the original winner Azkadellia was later disqualified due to the Peter Foster / Ben Connolly ownership saga.

The Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) also run on Blue Diamond Stakes day later in February is another potential next-up option for the mares out of the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes field and Probabeel (2021) was the last to do the double.

Probabeel returned in 2022 to go back-to-back in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes.

Better mares out of the race may also head up to Sydney for the autumn features there including the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) held at Randwick in April.

The 2022 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Flying Mascot going on to win the Mannerism Stakes and Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) at her next two starts.

The Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes 2023 ran on Saturday February 4, 2023 at Ladbrokes Park Hillside and was won by the Matthew Williams-trained favourite Wrote To Arataki ($3.20F).

Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes History

The Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes ran for the first time in 2001 and is one of the youngest Group 3 races held in Melbourne each year. The inaugural winner was Londolozi and since then the likes of Beaded (2011) and Tycoon Tara (2015) have won the event.

For one year in 2002 the event was run over an increased distance of 1600m, and after starting out as a Listed race it gained its Group 3 status in 2007. The race has been known as a number of different things over the years including the Hyderabad Race Club Plate / Stakes / Handicap, the Moduline Plate and simply the Bellmaine Stakes.

The 2018 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes Results saw the reigning champion Prussian Vixen return as a roughie $41 shot in betting and go back-to-back in the race.

There was another back-to-back Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes winner in Probabeel (2021 and 2022) who saluted as the favourite in both editions.

It was moved from Caulfield over 1200m to Ladbrokes Park Hillside (Sandown) over 1300m in 2023.
