Joe Pride’s electric grey Lekvarte ($9) could have the Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington in sight after getting held up slightly but flying home once in clear air to salute with Josh Parr aboard in the 2024 Angst Stakes results on The Everest Day.

With $250,000 in prize money on offer, the Group 3 Angst Stakes is a highly targeted event for mares heading south to Melbourne for the end of their spring campaigns. It is run under set weights plus penalties conditions, creating a level playing field which allows the more talented mares to stand out, and is open to mares aged four-years-old and above.

The Angst Stakes is currently held on The Everest Day which is headlined by the running of the world’s richest turf race – the now Group 1 $20 million The Everest (1200m).

Other key races on The Everest Day include the Group 1 $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m) which was formerly run as the George Main Stakes earlier in the spring, the $2 million The Kosciuszko slot race for country-trained horses, the Group 3 $1 million Silver Eagle for Golden Eagle-bound four-year-olds, and the lucrative Group 3 $2 million Sydney Stakes for horses that failed to gain a start in The Everest field.

A couple of lead-up races worth watching are the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) held at Newcastle and the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Hope In Your Heart (2022) was the last mare to complete Tibbie Stakes – Angst Stakes double.

In 2024 Lekvarte came via a Golden Pendant 4th to win the Angst Stakes at her next start.

The event serves as a potential lead-up into Flemington’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) over the Melbourne Cup Carnival and was won in 2019 by Nettoyer who went on to win the following year’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).

The form of the 2021 Angst Stakes was franked with the winner Mirra Vision returning the following autumn to run second in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).

Hope In Your Heart franked the Angst Stakes 2022 form running a next-up fourth in the $10 million Golden Eagle before a second in that year’s $1 million The Gong. She also returned in 2023 for a strong autumn that included a Doncaster Mile fourth and Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes second.

The 2024 Angst Stakes ran on Saturday October 19, 2024 as part of The Everest Day at Royal Randwick with the Joe Pride-trained Lekvarte ($9) excellent late really letting down to salute in an impressive upset.

Quickster second-up from a gun gate with Jamie Kah riding looks lovely value in the Angst Stakes on Saturday. The Shamus Award four-year-old from the Moody/Coleman stable was Group 3 placed and far from disgraced when under two lengths sixth in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks at Morphettville as a filly last time in. She resumed at Caulfield running credible third fresh over 1400m last month and will be improving off that. In okay weight wise with 55kg, will relish getting up to a mile now, and is drawn a treat. Only query would be if we get a really wet track but don’t think it will be the case. Can win at a price.

Angst Stakes History

A relatively young race, the Angst Stakes was inaugurated in 1994, following the renowned mare Angst’s excellent win in the 1993 Flight Stakes. Providing a competitive event for mares from diverse backgrounds who excel over a range of distances, the Angst Stakes has become an integral part of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

Between its inauguration and 2013, the Angst Stakes was classified as a Listed race. The continued rise in the quality of the field and the dependence on the race by trainers of older mares led to the Angst Stakes being upgraded to Group 3 prior to the 2014 edition.

The Angst Stakes has been variously held at Randwick and Rosehill Gardens. Much like the rest of NSW races, there was no Angst Stakes held in 2007 due to attempts to contain the outbreak of equine influenza. The Angst Stakes was once known as the Angst Mares Quality Handicap.

The distance of the Angst Stakes has changed a few times over the years, ranging from 1400m, to 1500m, to today’s distance of 1600m.

Notable Angst Stakes winners include Sky Watch (1994), Miss Zoe (2002), Neroli (2008) and Sharnee Rose (2013). In 2017 Dixie Blossoms made history as the first back-to-back Angst Stakes winner. Angst Stakes results and winning times since 2000 are listed below.

The 2022 Angst Stakes was rescheduled after Randwick racing was abandoned due to a wet track on the original date and moved to The Everest Day card a week later.
