The 2026 Angst Stakes results at Randwick saw the in-form Unleeshing ($3.30) continue her rise through the grades, producing a powerful finishing burst to win the Group 3 mile feature for mares and give trainer Bjorn Baker a quinella. The five-year-old daughter of Dundeel with Jason Collett aboard, stormed home from back in the field to defeat stablemate Pillow Fight by three-quarters of a length, with race favourite Vivy Air another 1¼ lengths away in third. Baker admitted he thought Unleeshing was in trouble approaching the home turn before she unleashed her trademark sprint, praising both the mare and her large MyRacehorse ownership group after her fourth win of a breakthrough campaign. Collett was equally impressed, noting the tempo suited perfectly and that the mare was able to settle comfortably before producing her best late. The victory made it back-to-back Randwick wins for the progressive Baker-trained mare, who has now won five of her 14 starts and surpassed $500,000 in prize money while further establishing herself as one of Sydney’s emerging mares in stakes company.

With $250,000 in prize money on offer, the Group 3 Angst Stakes is a highly targeted event for mares heading south to Melbourne for the end of their spring campaigns. The Angst Stakes is currently held on The Everest Day which is headlined by the running of the world’s richest turf race – the now Group 1 $20 million The Everest (1200m).

Other key races on The Everest Day include the Group 1 $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m) which was formerly run as the George Main Stakes earlier in the spring, the $2 million The Kosciuszko slot race for country-trained horses, the Listed $1 million Silver Eagle for Golden Eagle-bound four-year-olds, and the lucrative Group 2 $2 million Sydney Stakes for horses that failed to gain a start in The Everest field.

A couple of lead-up races worth watching are the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) held at Newcastle and the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Hope In Your Heart (2022) was the last mare to complete Tibbie Stakes – Angst Stakes double.

In 2024 Lekvarte came via a Golden Pendant 4th to win the Angst Stakes at her next start.

The event serves as a potential lead-up into Flemington’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) over the Melbourne Cup Carnival and was won in 2019 by Nettoyer who went on to win the following year’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).

The form of the 2021 Angst Stakes was franked with the winner Mirra Vision returning the following autumn to run second in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).

Hope In Your Heart franked the Angst Stakes 2022 form running a next-up fourth in the $10 million Golden Eagle before a second in that year’s $1 million The Gong. She also returned in 2023 for a strong autumn that included a Doncaster Mile fourth and Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes second.

The 2025 Angst Stakes winner, Idle Flyer, franked the form the following autumn winning the 2026 Queen Of The Turf.

Angst Stakes History

A relatively young race, the Angst Stakes was inaugurated in 1994, following the renowned mare Angst’s excellent win in the 1993 Flight Stakes. Providing a competitive event for mares from diverse backgrounds who excel over a range of distances, the Angst Stakes has become an integral part of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

Between its inauguration and 2013, the Angst Stakes was classified as a Listed race. The continued rise in the quality of the field and the dependence on the race by trainers of older mares led to the Angst Stakes being upgraded to Group 3 prior to the 2014 edition.

The Angst Stakes has been variously held at Randwick and Rosehill Gardens. Much like the rest of NSW races, there was no Angst Stakes held in 2007 due to attempts to contain the outbreak of equine influenza. The Angst Stakes was once known as the Angst Mares Quality Handicap.

The distance of the Angst Stakes has changed a few times over the years, ranging from 1400m, to 1500m, to today’s distance of 1600m.

Notable Angst Stakes winners include Sky Watch (1994), Miss Zoe (2002), Neroli (2008) and Sharnee Rose (2013). In 2017 Dixie Blossoms made history as the first back-to-back Angst Stakes winner. Angst Stakes results and winning times since 2000 are listed below.

The 2022 Angst Stakes was rescheduled after Randwick racing was abandoned due to a wet track on the original date and moved to The Everest Day card a week later.
