The meeting’s headline race is the Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) for milers and the Hawkesbury Guineas is one of two other Group 3 status races on the card along with the Hawkesbury Crown (1300m) for fillies and mares.

The Hawkesbury Guineas is run over 1400m and the three-year-olds in the field face off at set weights plus penalties for a share in the $250,000 in prize money. The 2020 edition of the Hawkesbury Guineas took place at Rosehill Gardens and offered $160,000 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Horses in the Hawkesbury Guineas field may come via a number of different Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival lead-up races including the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m) held at Randwick during ‘The Championships’.

Schwarz (6th in 2024) was the latest Arrowfield 3YO Sprint graduate to back-up and win the Hawkesbury Guineas.

In 2022 the Hawkesbury Guineas winner Mr Mozart came off back-to-back wins in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes and Group 3 Doncaster Prelude in Sydney.

Good follow-up races could include those during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival including the Group 2 QTC Cup (1300m) and the Hawkesbury Guineas – QTC Cup double was recently achieved by Spill The Beans (2016). The Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) is another Brisbane race run during the winter for Hawkesbury Guineas graduates and in 2016 Denmagic ran second in both races, while Sambro (2018) did the double.

In 2020 the Hawkesbury Guineas winner Dawn Passage won the Inglis Guineas next start before a trip to Brisbane to salute in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic as the short-priced favourite that winter.

The 2022 Hawkesbury Guineas form was franked with the winner Mr Mozart returning in the spring for a host of good runs including a second in the $1 million Silver Eagle.

The Hawkesbury Guineas 2023 winner Hawaii Five Oh franked the form going on to win the Group 3 Fred Best Classic in Brisbane before his eye-catching third in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap results.

The 2024 Hawkesbury Guineas form was franked with the winner, Schwarz, going on to win that year’s Group 2 Missile Stakes as well as the Group 2 Australia Stakes and Group 1 William Reid Stakes in 2025.

The 2026 Hawkesbury Guineas runs on Saturday May 2, 2026 as a potential lead-up to the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Each Way: No. 9 Karinska

KARINSKA (6) looks terrific overs in a wide-open Hawkesbury Guineas, and the Chris Waller-trained Spirit Of Boom filly appeals each way as an improver with genuine Group level talent. Her strike rate doesn’t jump off the page, but she’s already proven she can mix it with the elite — last spring’s Flight Stakes third at big odds stamped her as a filly with class. This campaign she’s been building nicely, her fifth in the Group 1 Surround Stakes on Soft ground better than it reads, and she took another step forward when dropping back to Group 3 company in the James HB Carr on April 18. Freshened for that run, she was enormous late, charging home after being badly held up to finish a flashing third, beaten just 1.32 lengths by Snitzel Dancer in what looks a strong form race. She strips fitter, gets a suitable set-up, and her closing speed gives her every chance to land a blow at a very appealing price.

Hawkesbury Guineas History

The Hawkesbury Guineas was run for the first time in 2000 and won by Hire. A number of quality gallopers have since taken out the race including Alverta (2007), Neeson (2010), and most famously Chautauqua.

It began as a Listed race before gaining its current Group 3 status in 2014. Originally the event was run as a handicap race, but from 2006 onwards the Hawkesbury Guineas has been held under set weights plus penalties. The distance was also increased from 1200m to 1400m in 2006 and in 2015 it ran at Rosehill Racecourse instead of Hawkesbury Racecourse.

The 2020 Hawkesbury Guineas took place at Rosehill Gardens due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
