The Thoroughbred Club Stakes is a Group 3 sprint for three-year-old fillies known in 2021 as the Maroona Stakes held at Caulfield Racecourse on Caulfield Guineas Day in October.
The Thoroughbred Club Stakes – currently run as the Maroona Stakes – is a Group 3 1200m sprint conducted at Caulfield Racecourse during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
Held under set weights plus penalties conditions and restricted to three year old fillies, the Thoroughbred Club Stakes provides a perfect opportunity for young fillies to showcase their talent in a highly competitive environment. With $200,000 prize money on offer, this is a lucrative race for connections of the winner.
The Thoroughbred Club Stakes falls on one of the most prestigious days of Victorian racing: Caulfield Guineas Day. The Thoroughbred Club Stakes forms part of a massive race card full of Black-Type events, which include the: Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m), Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m), the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m), Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) and Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) for stayers eyeing a Caulfield Cup ballot exemption.
The Group 3 MVRC Champagne Stakes is a good lead up event to watch, as a number of fillies come via there including Invincible Star (7th in 2017). In 2008, for example, Impressive Eagle improved on a Champagne Stakes third to take out second in this event. In 2009, Avenue won both events. The next year, Solar Charged came second in both events. The year after that (2011), Platelet won this following a second in the Champagne Stakes. In 2016 Hear The Chant improved on a lead-up last in the Champagne Stakes at Moonee Valley for her win.
More recently the 2019 Champagne Stakes winner Loving Gaby ran second in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes results before backing-up to win the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at The Valley on Cox Plate Eve.
In 2020 Swats That became the latest filly to complete the MVRC Champagne Stakes – Thoroughbred Club Stakes double. She then ran second in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes down the straight at Flemington.
Following a good run in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes, fillies might continue on to any number of races, depending on their preferred campaign. The Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes, the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes and the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes have all been won by fillies who had admirable runs in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes.
In 2018 the Thoroughbred Club Stakes winner Sunlight went on to beat the boys in the Coolmore Stud Stakes. She also won the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap / William Reid Stakes double down the Flemington straight the following autumn.
The 2021 Thoroughbred Club Stakes ran on Saturday October 9, 2021 and was won in an upset by last year’s $1 million Golden Gift winner Sneaky Five at 25/1.
