Wenona Girl Handicap

The Group 3 Wenona Girl Handicap is held each autumn in Sydney on Randwick Guineas Day.

2023 Wenona Girl Handicap Results

  • 1st: #13 Jal Lei (on protest)
  • 2nd: #5 Tycoon Evie
  • 3rd: #10 Jump The Broom (relegated)

The Wenona Girl Handicap is a Group 3 sprint race run in early to mid March during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Contested over 1200m the quality handicap event offers $200,000 in total prize money as of 2023 and is only open to mares aged four-years-old and above.

The Wenona Girl Handicap is one of a host of Group status races run at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Randwick Guineas Day. The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) for three-year-olds and the weight-for-age Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m).

Many mares in the Wenona Girl Handicap field may have had a previous Randwick run in February’s Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m). A nice next-up option is Rosehill’s Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) a fortnight after the Wenona Girl Handicap or possibly the previous week’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).

The 2022 Wenona Girl Handicap form was franked with the winner Belluci Babe going on to run a solid fourth in both the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) and Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) that autumn.

The Wenona Girl Handicap 2023 ran at Randwick on Saturday March 4, 2023 and was ultimately won by the John O’Shea-trained Jal Lei ($13) who crossed third but won a protest over first past the post Jump The Broom.

2023 Wenona Girl Handicap Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Wenona Girl Handicap 2023 Tips on the Randwick Guineas Day support act this autumn.

  • To Win: #9 Po Kare Kare ($6.50 at time of publish)

Going for a value bet in the Wenona and have the airborne Po Kare Kare on top in an open race. The Bryce Heys-trained Savabeel four-year-old has won two of her last three. She rose in grade last time out and won the Group 3 Triscay Stakes at this track and distance at a big price. Gets the chance at back-to-back Group 3s at Randwick getting in on 53kg again. Wider draw but was impressive last start. Can surprise a few again.

Wenona Girl Handicap History

The Wenona Girl Handicap was first contested in 2006 and won by a mare called Wonderer. Over its short history the event has run at both Randwick Racecourse and Warwick Farm Racecourse. The race is named in honour of Wenona Girl who is in the Australian Racing Hall of Fame and won a host of majors during the 1960s including the Rosehill Guineas (1960) and CF Orr Stakes (1962).

Starting out as a Listed race it gained Group 3 status in 2014 and in 2014 was run as the Roy Higgins Tribute Quality honouring champion jockey Roy Higgins (1938-2014) who died the week of the race.

Quality mares including Beaded (2010), Griante (2015) and Savoureux (2016) have won the Wenona Girl Handicap over the past decade.

There was a protest upheld (3rd vs 1st) in the 2023 Wenona Girl Handicap results that saw Jal Lei elevated to the winner’s stall while Jump The Broom was relegated to third.
