Toy Show Quality

The Toy Show Quality is a Group 3 sprint for fillies & mares held on Winx Stakes Day in August.

2023 Toy Show Quality Results

  • 1st: #7 Parisal
  • 2nd: #8 Queen Of The Ball
  • 3rd: #12 Lady Brook

The Toy Show Quality is a 1100m sprint, having been reduced in distance from 1300m for the 2019 edition, held towards the beginning of the Spring Racing Carnival every August at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

The Toy Show Quality is open only to fillies and mares and is run under quality handicap conditions. Raced across a distance of 1100m, the Toy Show Quality provides female gallopers with a nice spring kick-off looking ahead to the longer sprint races over the carnival.

Because the Toy Show Quality is held relatively early in the Spring Racing Carnival, many trainers target it as an early performance for their horse. There is usually a mixture of horses racing first-up, those who have already had black-type experience in their current campaign, and those who are only just kicking things off and may have had an unlisted run or two prior.

The Toy Show Quality shares the Group 1 Winx Stakes Day with the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m), the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) and the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2000m). The feature event is the recently upgraded Group 1 Winx Stakes – formerly the Warwick Stakes (1400m) – named in honour of four-time Cox Plate champion Winx.

Fillies and mares who run in the Toy Show Quality might go on to races such as the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes or the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes. The form has held up in better races over the years including the 2018 winner Egyptian Symbol winning the following year’s $1 million Magic Millions Sprint on the Gold Coast.

The Toy Show Quality also serves as a good lead-up into the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill the following month, a double most recently completed by Mizzy (2019). Mizzy also won that year’s Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) before third placings in the Silver Eagle (1300m) and The Golden Eagle (1500m) for four-year-old horses.

In 2020 the Toy Show Quality winner Sweet Deal went on to win Newcastle’s $1 million The Hunter that spring.

The 2022 Tow Show Quality form was franked with the winner Zapateo going on to run third in both the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes and Group 1 The Goodwood in Adelaide in 2023.

The 2023 Toy Show Quality ran on Saturday August 19, 2023 at Royal Randwick and was won in the closing stages by the classy Godolphin-raced Parisal ($3.70).

  • To Win: #1 Zougotcha ($3 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Hard to look past the all-class favourite from the Waller stable with Zougotcha resuming here. J Mac partners the now four-year-old daughter of Zoustar as she races for the first time since a ninth on a Heavy (9) behind Mr Brightside in the autumn’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m). She is two-from-three fresh, and prior to the Doncaster was flying. Won the Group 1 Flight Stakes here as a three-year-old, and she also beat home the boys in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes over the autumn. Against her own kind here she looks a big chance at a still backable price.

Toy Show Quality History

The Toy Show Quality was inaugurated in 1995 and originally ran as a listed race. The first edition of the Toy Show Quality was won by Joie Denise. While not a very old race, the Toy Show Quality has developed a decent reputation for providing an entertaining, competitive race with plenty of opportunity to gauge form.

The race is named after champion runner Toy Show, whose trophies include the 1975 Golden Slipper Stakes and the 1976 Thousand Guineas and Newmarket Handicap.

The Toy Show Quality was originally raced over a distance of 1400m. However, a move to Canterbury Park in 2000 saw the race reduced to 1300m for two years. In 2002, it again returned to 1400m, a distance it maintained until 2011. The race distance underwent another change for the 2019 edition being cut to just 1100m.

Upgraded to a Group 3 event in 2013, the Toy Show Quality has been hosted by three major Sydney racecourse; Royal Randwick Racecourse, Warwick Farm Racecourse and Canterbury Park.

Notable Toy Show Quality winners include Captivating (1997), Chiming Lass (2000), Illuminates (2010), Red Tracer (2011) and Mizzy (2019).
