Randwick’s $20 million The Everest (1200m) is the world’s richest turf race run in October and gained Group 1 status in 2024.
The other latest Australian horse race to be upgraded to a Group 1 is the All-Star Mile held in the autumn at rotating tracks around Melbourne.
Group 1 races are the most esteemed races around the world and feature the greatest sprint and staying racehorses from around the globe. Horses and their trainers will travel miles to compete in international Group 1 races in the hope of taking home another winning title.
The biggest Group 1 races in Australia include the Melbourne Cup, WS Cox Plate, Victoria Derby, VRC Oaks and the Australian Cup. Majority of the major races in Australia are held at either Randwick Racecourse in Sydney or Flemington in Melbourne.
