The Eurythmic Stakes (formerly the Northerly Stakes) is a Group 3 sprint held at Ascot Racecourse in Perth during October each year renamed in 2022 in honour of former champion racehorse Eurythmic whose Group 1 wins included the Caulfield Cup (1920) and Sydney Cup (1921).
Raced over 1400m, the Eurythmic Stakes is a set weights plus penalties event open to horses aged three years and older.
With prize money of $200,000, this is a fairly lucrative Group 3 event and tends to attract a field to match.
The race was renamed ahead of the 2022 edition so as not to be confused with the also recently renamed Group 1 Northerly Stakes (formerly the Kingston Town Classic) held in Perth in December.
The Eurythmic Stakes is the headline event on the day, sharing the race schedule with only one other black type event, the Listed Crawford Stakes (1000m) for short-distance specialists. The Group 1 $5 million Caulfield Cup is held in Melbourne on the same day.
Horses who run well in the Eurythmic Stakes often target the bigger and better races in WA over the summer including the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at the end of November.
Recently the classy mare Galaxy Star improved on a second in the Northerly Stakes to win the Railway Stakes in 2018.
In 2015 subsequent six-time Group 1 champion Black Heart Bart completed the Birthday Stakes – Northerly Stakes – Group 2 Lee Steere treble. The following year Lite’n In My Veins (2016) also took out the Birthday Stakes – Northerly Stakes double. The form has been the one to follow in recent years with Silverstream (2017) improving on a Birthday Stakes second to win both the Northerly Stakes and Lee Steere Stakes.
The form out of the 2021 race was franked with the runner-up Massimo winning the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) next start. Valour Road meanwhile ran third in the Northerly and second in the Lee Steere Stakes results that season.
In 2022 the Eurythmic Stakes winner Resortman went on to run third in the Lee Steere before a fourth in that year’s Railway Stakes results. Massimo meanwhile improved on a third in the Eurythmic to win that year’s Lee Steere Stakes next start.
The 2023 Eurythmic Stakes ran on Saturday October 21, 2023 as a lead-up to Perth’s Group 1 Railway Stakes and was won in sweeping fashion by the Summer Dickson-trained Karli’s Karma ($8).

- To Win: #6 Bustler ($6.50 at time of publish) – BET NOW
Great edition of the Eurythmic in Perth, but have landed on the returning Bustler who doesn’t know how to run a bad race. The four-year-old son of Playing God boasts a 50% winning strike-rate at the Ascot track (8:4-1-0), is two-from-three fresh, and has a flawless three-from-three record at the distance. Winner of the Group 3 Belmont Sprint in the winter, he was last seen finishing under a length back third to Startrade in the Group 3 Hyperion over the mile in late May. Had a nice break and presents now as a furnished four-year-old with every chance to kick off his latest prep in style so long as he gets into the right spot from the wide alley.

Northerly Stakes / Eurythmic Stakes History
When run as the Northerly Stakes the event was named after the 2002 Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate winner Northerly, who also took out the 2001 Cox Plate and Australian Cup, making him one of the most prolific runners to ever come out of the west.
The Northerly Stakes was renamed in 2006, two years after the great Northerly retired. Initially a listed race, the Northerly Stakes received an upgrade to Group 3 status in 2013. With that came an increase in prize money from $125,000 to $150,000.
The Northerly Stakes was previously known as the WATC Anniversary Cup.
In 2000, the Northerly Stakes was run over 1600m. In 1999, it was 1800m.
Notable Northerly Stakes / Eurythmic Stakes winners include Megatic (2008, 2009), King Saul (2012), Playing God (2013) and Black Heart Bart (2015) who went on to win six Group 1 wins around the country. Northerly Stakes results, including winning times, are listed below.
Ahead of the 2022 edition the race was renamed the Eurythmic Stakes.
