Progressive Palace Pier colt Southend ($7.50) from the Ryan/Alexiou stable made it a perfect two-from-two start to his career when coming off a winning debut at Newcastle to show his class with a dominant win in the 2026 TL Baillieu Stakes results on Saturday. Settled off pace by jockey Dylan Gibbons, the up-and-comer was strong late coming from sixth on the turn for home before hitting the lead inside the final 300m and draw away to deny the favourite Persian Wonder victory by over a length. Southend has now firmed in from $51 to $13 through Ladbrokes.com.au is futures markets for the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ at Randwick next weekend.

A quality handicap for two-year-old horses run over 1400m, the event offers $250,000 in total prize money and is a key support act on Tancred Stakes Day that is headlined by two Group 1 races – the Tancred Stakes (2400m) and Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).
Young horses head into the TL Baillieu Handicap field via earlier autumn runs in races including the Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) or Group 3 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) a fortnight earlier at the track.
Following a run in the TL Baillieu Handicap, two-year-olds may continue onto the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick or step up to a mile for the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) in mid-April.
In 2016 Prized Icon ran second in the Baillieu Handicap and won the Champagne Stakes two starts later. The following year, The Mission (2017) won the Baillieu and after an unplaced Sires’ run took out the Group 1 Champagne Stakes.
Nepotism (2025) was the last horse to complete the TL Baillieu / Champagne Stakes double.
The form of the 2021 TL Baillieu was franked when the runner-up Converge went on to third in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) that April and also win the Group 1 J. J. Atkins (1600m) in Brisbane that winter.
The 2022 TL Baillieu Handicap form was franked with the winner Williamsburg going on to run third that prep in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m). He also returned in the autumn of 2023 and placed third in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).
The 2024 TL Baillieu Handicap winner Linebacker franked the form with a next-up second in the Champagne Stakes and a Group 1 Randwick Guineas victory the following autumn in 2025.
The TL Baillieu Handicap 2026 ran on Saturday March 28, 2026 at Rosehill Gardens on Tancred Stakes Day as a lead-up to the Champagne Stakes and was won in a strong performance by the still undefeated Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained colt Southend ($7.50). Â

To Win: No. 4 Persian Wonder
PERSIAN WONDER (4) is narrow favourite for the Baillieu, and I think this looks the perfect race for David Payne’s promising young gelding to break his maiden status. Has had four runs to date and, while he remains winless, he’s a progressive type who looks set to peak now. Fourth-up and ready to fire, he faces a somewhat easier line-up than last start when fourth only 1.23 lengths beaten by Warwoven in the Group 3 Pago Pago here over 1200m a fortnight back. Was dead last turning for home before reeling off some outstanding late sectionals, and he’s one who I believe will relish the 1400m now based on how he closed in that. Won’t be found at that crazy 90/1 starting price again. Deserving favourite drawn ideally with the best in the business, James McDonald, coming back aboard in the real ticker. Should be able to land closer from the draw and is the one to beat.

2026 TL Baillieu Handicap Field
The TL Baillieu Handicap field draws classy two-year-olds showing the potential to run out a strong 1400m or even a mile. Many of the youngsters in the race missed out on a run in the $5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) the weekend prior or were saved for this easy target.

TL Baillieu Handicap History
The TL Baillieu Handicap has been run and won since 1986 and is named in honour of the Australian Jockey Club’s former Chairman Tom Latham Baillieu. From 2010 – 2016 it ran as The Schweppervescence (and again in 2022), and after starting out as a Listed race it gained Group 3 status in 2011.
Before the move to Rosehill Racecourse in 2010 the TL Baillieu Handicap was previously contested at a number of other Sydney racetracks including Royal Randwick, Randwick’s Kensington track and Warwick Farm Racecourse.
