The Sunshine Coast Guineas – now known as the Winx Guineas in honour of the event’s 2015 champion Winx – is a Group 3 race held annually at Sunshine Coast Racecourse. The Sunshine Coast Guineas brings up the tail end of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival and represents some of the last black-type racing in Queensland before the break for the winter.

The Winx Guineas is traditionally held on Caloundra Cup Day, alongside the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m) and the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m).

Offering $300,000 in prize money as of 2023, the Winx Guineas is a mile event raced over 1600m. Entrants tend to be the three-year-old horses at the end of their winter campaign looking to collect one last black-type trophy before resting for the winter.

The Group 2 Queensland Guineas held at Eagle Farm is considered a solid lead up race, along with the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1400m).

In 2020 the Sunshine Coast Guineas was renamed the Winx Guineas in honour of the 2015 champion Winx who went on to become the sole four-time Cox Plate champion in history.

The 2020 Winx Guineas also ran as the feature race at Caloundra without a 2020 edition of the Caloundra Cup taking place due to COVID-19 and a number of restrictions and reductions to the entire Queensland Winter Racing Carnival. It was also worth a reduced $125,000 in prize money before enjoying a prize money boost the following season.

The 2023 Winx Guineas ran on Saturday July 1st, 2023 at the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and was won in an upset by the flying John Symons & Sheila Laxon-trained Knight’s Choice ($15).

Locally-trained Extreme Choice gelding Knight’s Choice ($15) continued his outstanding recent form with the rising star flashing home down the outside over the final furlong to post an impressive upset in the Winx Guineas 2023 results at the Sunshine Coast for his fourth mile win on the trot.

Wide-open Winx Guineas field at the Sunshine Coast this year with a number of the top hopes drawn out wide. Happy to go out on a limb with this in-form local gelding at a big price to upset the interstate raiders. A nicely-bred son of Extreme Choice the galloper has a star record at the track ( 3:2-0-0) and is the proven miler in the mix. With a number of the runners up in distance this horse boasts a flawless three-from-three record at the distance. Last start carried more weight to a comprehensive mile win at Doomben. Up in grade but going too good to ignore with a favourable barrier six draw to boot.

2023 Winx Guineas Field

The Sunshine Coast Guineas field features 18 runners and attracts a host of end-of-winter three-year-olds coming off lead-up races held during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Gallopers may have had a lead-up run in a race like the Queensland Guineas, or the fillies in the Sunshine Coast Guineas field may be graduates out of the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) from Stradbroke Handicap Day.

The 2023 Winx Guineas final field features a capacity line-up of three-year-old milers led in betting by the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained Grebeni chasing a fourth win on the trot and last start Group 3 Gunsynd Classic third place-getter Soothsayer.

Sunshine Coast Guineas History

The Sunshine Coast Guineas ran as a listed race for the last time in 2012, as it was upgraded to Group 3 shortly after and ran as such for the 2013 edition. Prior to 2006, the race was unlisted; improving fields and its standing as a decent mile event led to the decision to upgrade its standing.

Notable winners of the Sunshine Coast Guineas include Shenzhou Steeds (2011), Diamondsondinside (2006) and Sunset (2000).

Of course the standout Sunshine Coast winner in history is Winx (2015) who would go on to become Australian racing’s greatest horse.

The 2018 Sunshine Coast Guineas winner The Bostonian also franked the form of the race the following winter in Brisbane winning the Group 1 Doomben 10,0000 / Kingsford-Smith Cup double. Sunshine Guineas results since 2000 are listed below.

In 2020 the Sunshine Coast Guineas was renamed the Winx Guineas to honour the 2015 winning filly Winx who went on to make history over her brilliant career that included a record four Cox Plate victories.
