The Belle Of The Turf Stakes is a Group 3 event held at Gosford Racecourse during the summer in late December having been moved from its previous time slot of January as part of the Central Coast Carnival.

Raced over one mile (1600m), the Belle Of The Turf Stakes is held under handicap conditions and pays $240,000 total prize money as of 2022. It is open only to fillies and mares aged three years and older, and tends to be a popular Christmas season target taking place around the Boxing Day races.

The key support act on the Belle Of The Turf Stakes Day card is the Listed Gosford Guineas (1200m) for three-year-old sprinters.

Fillies and mares in the Belle Of The Turf Stakes field traditionally come off lead-up summer races against similar company at Sydney tracks like Warwick Farm and Rosehill Gardens.

In 2017 there were two editions of the Belle Of The Turf Stakes, the first won by Imposing Lass in mid-January and the later to run in late December with the Joe Pride-trained Pecans victorious for her first Group race victory.

The 2021 Belle Of The Turf Stakes form was franked with the winner, Expat, returning the following autumn to win the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill in February of 2022.

Eligible Belle Of The Turf Stakes graduates may back-up the next month heading to Queensland for the Magic Millions races like the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares (1300m) at the Gold Coast.

Belle Of The Turf Stakes History

The history of the Belle Of The Turf Stakes reaches back at least to 1988, with St. Klaire winning the race that year.

Previously a listed race, the Belle Of The Turf Stakes was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2013, making it the ideal target for talented types to get some group level points on the scoreboard.

Notable recent Belle Of The Turf Stakes winners include Mamwaazel (2015) and Imposing Lass (January, 2017). Imposing Lass won the first of two editions of the race in 2017 with a second scheduled in December after a move by the Gosford Turf Club and subsequently won by Pecans (December, 2017).
