The Summoned Stakes is a Group 3 mares-only event held in November on Zipping Classic Day.
The Summoned Stakes is a Group 3 race held at Sandown Racecourse – now Ladbrokes Park* – at the end of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival on the second Saturday of November on Zipping Classic Day.
*Note: The 2021 Summoned Stakes and Zipping Classic Day card moved to late November at Caulfield Racecourse.
Raced over 1500m (1600m in 2021 at Caulfield), the Summoned Stakes is held under set weights plus penalties conditions. Entry is restricted to mares aged four years and older.
With $200,000 prize money on offer, and as the only mares’ only event held on the card, the Summoned Stakes is quite a popular end-of-spring target and is named in honour of class broodmare Summoned.
The Summoned Stakes is held on Zipping Classic Day, which is one of the biggest days of racing at Sandown Racecourse (Caulfield in 2021) during the year. Other races on the program include the Group 2 Zipping Classic (1400m), Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m), Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m), Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) and three Listed events, including the 3200m Sandown Cup.
Mares are typically pointed towards the Summoned Stakes at the tail end of a lengthy spring campaign. As Zipping Classic Day is essentially the last day of black-type racing in Melbourne for the spring, it’s a popular race for mares looking for some more prize money or further glory.
Typical lead up races include the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) – formerly the Myer Classic – over the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the latter producing recent Summoned Stakes winners Solicit (7th 2015) and Politeness (7th 2014). Politeness also went on to win the following year’s Myer Classic in 2015.
Missile Mantra (6th in 2020) followed by Steinem (9th in 2021) are the latest Summoned Stakes winning mares to salute on the back of a lead-up Empire Rose Stakes run.
The 2021 Summoned Stakes ran on Saturday November 27, 2021 at Caulfield Racecourse and was won by the Maher/Eustace-trained favourite Steinem ($2.60).

Missile Mantra ($3.80 in 2020) followed by Steinem ($2.60 in 2021) are the latest favourites in Summoned Stakes betting to salute.
The Summoned Stakes field attracts a fairly decent host of mares every year. In recent years, the quality of the Summoned Stakes field has been recognised, with the race receiving an upgrade to Group 3 in 2013. Those mares who end up in the Summoned Stakes field may have come via a variety of preparations, ranging from non black type to Group 1 feature events.
The 2021 Summoned Stakes final field is released on the Wednesday before race day and will be published below once announced by Racing Victoria.
The Summoned Stakes nominations attract a bumper list of early hopefuls, mares coming off lead-up races in earlier Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival events like the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) on Caulfield Cup Day in late October.
The Summoned Stakes was previously a listed race. However, years of consistently high quality fields and decent racing led to the ARB upgrading the event to Group 3 prior to the 2013 edition.
It has developed a reputation for being an exciting race that attracts some of the standout mares of the spring racing carnival.
In 2013, the Summoned Stakes was held at Caulfield Racecourse due to upgrades taking place at Sandown.
In the future, the Summoned Stakes will very likely be further upgraded as it becomes a more popular end-of-season target for decent mares.
Notable Summoned Stakes winners include Politeness (2014) and Silent Sedition (2016), the latter going on to win the following autumn’s Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).
In 2021 the Summoned Stakes ran over 1600m at Caulfield Racecourse.
