The The Nivison is a Group 3 sprint currently run at Rosehill Racecourse (moved from Royal Randwick ahead of the 2023 edition) in early to mid-October as part of the new-look Hill Stakes Day program.

Run under set weights plus penalties conditions, The Nivison is restricted to mares aged four years and older. It is raced over 1200m and offers $250,000 in total prize money as of 2023.

The Nivison is a key support act on an exciting race card now headlined by the lucrative $2 million Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m) for Spring Cup-bound stayers.

Potential lead-up races include the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) and Newcastle’s Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m).

After contesting The Nivison mares may target a next-up run in the Group 2 $500,000 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill or even the $1 million The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange.

Another potential next-up option for mares out of The Nivison field is the Group 3 Begonia Belle Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on Derby Day and Minhaaj (2021) was the last to do the double.

Mares may also head to the $2 million The Invitation (1400m) at Randwick on The Everest Day.

The 2023 The Nivison ran on Saturday October 7, 2023 at Rosehill Gardens on Hill Stakes Day and was won by Grahame Begg’s classy Hellbent mare Magic Time ($2.50F).

Going for a first-up value runner with Royal Merchant on top. This four-year-old daughter of Merchant Navy is a classy mare from a classy stable running for Maher & Eustace. She has previous first-up winning form and is three-form-four over the distance. Runs for the first time since her 11th in Brisbane’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at 30/1. She was four and a half lengths beaten there by Think About It who won the Group 2 Premiere Stakes fresh on way to The Everest this prep, which bodes well for Royal Merchant here. She gives the weight away carrying the 59kg top-weight as a Group 1 winner of The Goodwood in SA, but even with the kilos should run better than her price suggests.

The Nivison History

The Nivison was inaugurated in 1994 as the Tarien Quality Handicap. It was originally named in honour of renowned mare Tarien, who took out the Warwick Stakes twice and also the 1953 George Main Stakes and Craven Plate. The Nivison received its current name in 1997.

In 2011, the City Tattersalls Club rescheduled their meeting to mid October. Prior to this, the Nivison was held during September.

Initially a non black type event, the Nivison was upgraded to Listed status in 1997. In 2013 it became a Group 3 race and has maintained that status since then.

The Nivison has always been held at Royal Randwick, and has always been held over 1200m. The Nivison was not held in 2007 due to the equine influenza.

Notable The Nivison winners include Aunty Mary (1994), Razor Blade (1998), Our Sweet Moss (2005) and Madame Pedrille (2009). The Nivison results and winning times since 2000 are provided below.

The event was moved from Randwick to Rosehill ahead of the 2023 edition.
