Memsie Stakes News

The 1400m event is held as the first Group 1 of the new racing season and is a great lead up race to the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) run a fortnight later over the mile at Flemington.

Dissident (2014) followed by Mr Brightside (2023) nearly a decade later are the latest horses to complete the Memsie Stakes – Makybe Diva Stakes double.

Raced on the same day as the Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m), the Group 3 The Heath 1100 Stakes (1100m) and the Group 3 W.W. Cockram Stakes (1200m), the Memsie Stakes has produced some outstanding Cox Plate winners including El Segundo (2006), Makybe Diva (2005), Sunline (2001-01), and Dane Ripper (1998).

The Memsie Stakes is now the first Group 1 race of the racing year after it was elevated from Group 2 status for the 2013/2014 season.

The form out of the 2021 Memsie Stakes was franked with the third-placed mare Tofane going on to place in a host of other Group 1 events and win the following autumn’s Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m) at the same track/distance.

The 2022 Memsie Stakes form was franked with the runner-up I’m Thunderstruck winning the Makybe Diva next start before a number of other Group 1 placings including a second in that year’s Ladbrokes Cox Plate. Sadly I’m Thunderstruck would go on to be euthanised in March of 2023 following arthroscopic fetlock surgery. He suffered a catastrophic knee injury whilst getting up after general anaesthetic.

In 2023 after completing the Memsie Stakes – Makybe Diva double, Mr Brightside went on to further frank the form with a host of other Group 1 placings including in the $5 million King Charles III Stakes (2nd), Cox Plate (2nd) and Cantala Stakes (2nd). He returned in the autumn of 2024 to win the CF Orr – Futurity Stakes double before a second in that year’s All-Star Mile.

Mr Brightside returned as the favourite in 2024 looking to go back-to-back but could only manage to finish a first-up second to upset winner Pinstriped ($14).

The 2024 Memsie Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Mr Brightside, who had won the year prior, taking out the Makybe Diva Stakes at his next start.

Mr Brightside contested the race again in 2025 when running a brave but distant second behind the brilliant Treasurethe Moment who made it nine straight wins with her impressive first-up win as a four-year-old. He franked the form however with his third straight Makybe Diva Stakes victory next start.

The 2025 Memsie Stakes winner Treasurethe Moment would continue on to run top three in a host more Group 1 events including that spring’s Might And Power (2nd) and Cox Plate (3rd). The 2025 third placed Buckaroo meanwhile also performed well in plenty of subsequent runs that season including placings in the Underwood Stakes (2nd), Might And Power (3rd) and Cox Plate (2nd).

2026 Memsie Stakes Betting

The season’s Memsie Stakes 2026 betting odds and betting market links to Ladbrokes.com.au will be available at Races.com.au as soon as released this spring carnival.

Mr Brightside ($2.70 in 2023) was the last favourite in Memsie Stakes betting to salute for the punters.

There was a notable upset in 2024 with Pinstriped saluting at Memsie Stakes odds of $14 over the beaten $2.50 favourite Mr Brightside who ran second in a failed title defence.
