With the Memsie Stakes just two weeks away to kick off Group 1 racing in Melbourne for the season, it’s no surprise to see another class edition of the Group 2 $300,000 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m).

This pivotal weight-for-age showdown is a proven spring campaign kick-off for the season’s elite middle-distance horses and returning Group gallopers, and the star-studded winners’ list includes the likes of Super Elegant, Regal Roller, Apache Cat, Whobegotyou, Hartnell, Mystic Journey, dual champ Mr Brightside and last year’s hero Private Eye.

Private Eye returns chasing back-to-back victories and Joe Pride’s returning nine-year-old veteran may be getting on in years, but he remains a key chance occupying the second line of PB Lawrence Stakes betting at $4.20 through Ladbrokes.

While he may not be quite at the same pitch he was 12 months ago, he’s still a seasoned Group 1 campaigner who can never be dismissed fresh.

His winter prep wrapped with a solid fifth in the Stradbroke on testing ground, and earlier in the season he was right in the finish first-up in the Hall Mark Stakes, reminding punters he’s always dangerous when produced off a break.

He’ll get his preferred tempo here and is the class runner of the field jumping from gate 12 of 13 with Nash Rawiller continuing associations.

The horse he has to knock off is the airborne Cosmic Crusader, a Perth expat dominating betting on the PB Lawrence Stakes at a current quote of $2.45.

The now Andrea Leek-trained Maurice gelding looks set to make another serious statement in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes, arriving second-up with a profile that suggests further improvement.

His Melbourne debut in the Bletchingly Stakes was emphatic — settling off a crawl before unleashing that trademark surge to put the race away by 2.5 lengths.

A proven Group 1 winner in Perth having claimed last summer’s Northerly Stakes over 1800m, he’s clearly on an upward trajectory and now gets a more suitable trip as he stretches to seven furlongs.

His second-up record is outstanding, including an eight-length demolition at Belmont on Soft ground, and he again strikes similar conditions here.

With fitness on his side, a strong Caulfield tick, and a setup that mirrors his best performances, Cosmic Crusader shapes as the runner they’ll all be chasing.

He’s expected to land midfield and build into it, he should only elevate off that first-up hit-out at the track — and remains the one to beat looking to go back-to-back for the punters following Private Eye ($3.10 in 2025).

Only two other gallopers in the 13-horse field are currently under double figures for the win with the resuming Lindsay Park-raced Evaporate ($6) and the Dominic Sutton-trained Feroce ($9).

The now five-year-old Per Incanto gelding resumes after a four-and-a-half-month break and looks forward enough following a sharp recent trial win, suggesting he’s ready to fire fresh.

His autumn campaign ended in the Doncaster, where he wasn’t disgraced despite finishing midfield on a testing surface, and earlier in the prep he produced a strong first-up run in the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield, sticking on bravely behind Pericles.

He actually had no luck in last year’s P.B. Lawrence when fifth, forced to chase a dawdling tempo set by Private Eye, who controlled the race from the front.

This time around, he maps to roll across and take up a prominent position again with Blake Shinn in the saddle, and his proven ability to absorb pressure first-up over this trip makes him a genuine knockout hope.

With tactical speed, a solid fresh record and the right race shape, Evaporate has the peaks to trouble the favourites and is capable of giving this field something to catch.

Super Seth five-year-old Feroce is the potential blowout hope in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes field, bringing a strong 1400m profile and a fresh record that consistently puts him in the finish.

He also resumes off a nearly five length spell and closed out his last campaign with a brave second in the Doncaster Prelude, handling Soft ground and sticking on strongly late.

His fresh run last prep here at Caulfield was equally encouraging — beaten only a head by the talented Tom Kitten in the Kevin Heffernan Stakes over this trip — and his earlier effort in the Sir Rupert Clarke at the same course and distance showed he’s more than capable at Group 1 level.

He maps to land midfield, blend into the race and launch late, which is exactly how he produced his best performances.

With proven form at 1400m, a strong fresh profile and a race shape that suits a swooper, Feroce is the value danger who can make things interesting at double-figure PB Lawrence odds.
