Up & Coming Winner Grand Prairie Firms from $101 to $21 in Golden Rose 2025 Betting

The Up And Coming Stakes is a Group 3 event held in Sydney during August each year. Previously held as part of the Winx Stakes Day program, in 2020 the event was moved forward a week to run as the feature event on its own race meeting in mid-August.

The official Up And Coming Stakes 2025 Results on the potential Golden Rose Stakes lead-up race will be available below once the race runs on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

The consistent Peter Snowden trained Written Tycoon colt Grand Prairie ($3.90F) went one better than his lead-up The Rosebud second to win a messy edition of the Up And Coming Stakes in 2025. The event was marred by the fall of Tyreek and jockey Dylan Gibbons on the home straight.

In the end, it was Grand Prairie who burst through 100m out from the line to go head-to-head the closing stages with the Chris Waller roughie Fermoy on his outside before holding on to salute for the punters in a thriller.

From 2022 it runs on the same card as the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

Offering $250,000 in total prize money as of 2023, the Up And Coming Stakes is a nice early Sydney Spring Racing Carnival lead-up for youngsters heading towards tougher runs.

Raced over 1300m the Up And Coming Stakes is open only to three-year-old horses and is run under quality handicap conditions.

Prior to 2014, the race was restricted to colts and geldings only and ran under set weights plus penalties conditions, essentially acting as a complementing race to the Toy Show Quality, which is restricted to fillies and mares.

Horses that compete in the Up And Coming Stakes could be kicking off their spring preps or be coming off a lead-up run in a winter event at Rosehill.

Later events that horses out of the Up And Coming Stakes field could go on to contest include the following month’s $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m). In 2020 North Pacific won the Up & Coming Stakes as the odds-on favourite and went on to run second in that year’s Golden Rose quinella.

Manawanui (2011) was the last horse to do the Up And Coming Stakes – Golden Rose double.

The form out of the 2021 Up And Coming Stakes was franked with the runner-up Coastwatch going on to run third in that year’s Golden Rose Stakes on the back of a next-up Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality victory.

In 2022 Golden Mile improved on a second in the Up & Coming Stakes to win the Ming Dynasty next start. He then finished fourth in the Golden Rose before heading south to take out the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne. Golden Mile continued his winning ways in the $1 million Callander-Presnell, which has replaced the now defunct Stan Fox Stakes.

The 2023 Up And Coming Stakes winner Tom Kitten franked the form going on to win that year’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m). The form was further franked with the third placegetter Encap winning the Group 3 Ming Dynasty next start before a second in that season’s Golden Rose Stakes quinella.

A dramatic edition of the Up And Coming Stakes 2025 ran on Saturday, August 30, 2025 Rosehill Gardens as a Golden Rose Stakes lead-up with the Peter Snowden trained Grand Prairie ($3.90F) saluting for the punters narrowly in a race marred by the fall of Tyreek and jockey Dylan Gibbons.

North Pacific ($1.85 in 2020), Tiger Of Malay ($3.30 in 2021), Kibou ($3.50 in 2022), Autumn Glow ($2.05 in 2024), and Grand Prairie ($3.90 in 2025) are the latest favourites in the Up And Coming Stakes odds to salute for the punters.

There was a notable upset in 2023 with Tom Kitten winning at Up And Coming Stakes odds of $11.

GRAND PRAIRIE (2) looks terrific value in this year’s Up And Coming Stakes for Peter Snowden with the progressive Written Tycoon colt riding in with some very good form this prep. He won on the Kensington track to break his maiden status fresh in July and has placed second in his two subsequent runs here at Rosehill. At his latest the emerging Golden Rose contender was only a half-length off Skyhook in the Listed Rosebud (1100m) on a Heavy (8). Having run well in that, I think he’ll get the 1300m now on slightly firmer going. While he goes up in weight, it is only a half-kilo more and he is still in it with 54kg. Tom Sherry continues associations from barrier two in a small field featuring a few who might need the run. He’s fit, firing and doesn’t look like he’s going backwards.

Up And Coming Stakes History

Inaugurated in 1979, with Spear taking out the first edition, the Up And Coming Stakes has a storied history of quality sprinting.

Originally a competition strictly for colts and geldings, as of 2014 the Up And Coming Stakes has been open to both sexes. However, in the past it was an exciting competition of male horses competing for supremacy and provided fantastic form insight as to how horses perform against their stronger peers.

Named after famed Warwick Stakes winner Up And Coming (1959), the Up And Coming Stakes has a long association with the Warwick Stakes.

Originally raced over 1200m, the distance was dropped for a year in 1989 to 1160m. Between 1990 and 2010 it was again 1200m. In 2011, the race began to be run over 1300m. In 1979 the race was classified as listed and retained that status for exactly 1 year.

The Up And Coming Stakes was a Group 3 event between 1980 and 1992 prior to an upgrade to Group 2. This upgrade lasted from 1993 to 2004, then in 2005 the race ran as a Group 3 event. It returned to Group 2 for one year in 2013, but in 2014 was ran as a Group 3 event.

The race venue has changed regularly between Warwick Farm, where it was originally held, and Royal Randwick and Canterbury Park racecourses. In 2021 the event runs at Kembla Grange Racecourse due to COVID-19 changes and restrictions, before moving to the San Domenico Stakes Day card at Rosehill in 2022.

Notable Up And Coming Stakes winners include Royal Troubador (1984), Mahogany (1993), General Nediym (1997), Exceed And Excel (2003), Court Command (2006) and Manawanui (2011).
