Second-up. Promising on debut ran on from midfield and won by a head in a 2yo Hcp at this track on June 6 over 1100m on a rain affected track defeating Seductra carrying 56kg at $5. Went for a break before returning 3rd of 10 in the G2 Roman Consul Stakes at Rosehill on October 10 over 1200m, 1.75 len behind Satono Glow with 56.5kg at $21. Fitter for that run and there is a stack of room for improvement second-up.

Recent form sound. Last start raced on the pace when 3rd of 9 in a LR The Tapp-Craig at Rosehill on October 10 over 1400m, 2 len behind Chuchichaschtli carrying 55kg at $11. The start before that raced right near the speed and boxed on; won by 3 len in a Cg&E Mdn at Kembla Grange on September 26 over 1400m defeating Italian Spirit carrying 57kg at $1.75. Drawn to have an impact in a race like this.
7. Gridlock (9)
J: Tommy Berry 57kg

Third-up today and placed third-up in the past. Resuming won by 0.7 len in a Super Cg&E M-Sw at Newcastle on September 19 over 1250m defeating Klocke with 56.5kg at $7.50. Second run from a spell won by 1.3 len in a Bm64 at Kembla Grange on October 10 over 1400m defeating Fiftyfivechevy with 56.5kg at $4.40. Will need to do even more to match a few of these.

At the latest run got back early 5th of 9 in a LR The Tapp-Craig at Rosehill on October 10 over 1400m, 3 len behind Chuchichaschtli with 55kg at $71. Before that 3rd of 10 in a 3yo Bm68 at Warwick Farm on September 23 over 1200m, on a slow track; 3.5 len behind Blessed Eagle with 57kg at $10. Not keen on his chances this time.

253 T: Michael Freedman
Most recently 3rd of 8 in a Mdn-Sw at Randwick Kensington on October 7 over 1400m, on a slow track; 6 len behind Love Story with 54.5kg at $17. The race before that sat on the speed and boxed on steadily 5th of 8 in a F&M Mdn at Newcastle on September 18 over 1400m, 1.2 len behind Your Colour carrying 57.5kg at $12. Meets a tough line-up so prefer others.

J: Regan Bayliss 55kg
53 T: John Sargent
Dual acceptor. Raced two times to date. At debut, sat on the speed and boxed on steadily 5th of 7 in a 3yo Mdn-Sw at Randwick Kensington on September 9 over 1150m, 5 len behind Threads with 55kg at $19. Last start made some head-way from midfield; 3rd of 12 in a Mid Mdn-Sw at Kembla Grange on October 10 over 1200m, 1.1 len behind Bold Bucks with 55kg at $5. Looks tested in this field.

Formerly known as the Stan Fox Stakes, it is held on Spring Champion Stakes Day in October on the same day as Melbourne’s Cox Plate Day card.

Conducted at the esteemed Royal Randwick Racecourse, it is one of the key support acts on the card headlined by the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) – now worth an incredible $2 million – for VRC Derby hopefuls.

Formerly named after the prolific New South Wales thoroughbred owner-breeder Stan Fox, the event had a notable re-vamp ahead of the 2022 edition to replace the now defunct $1 million Bondi Stakes race for three-year-olds.

Moved to late October and having its prize money doubled to $1 million, the Stan Fox Stakes was renamed the Callander-Presnell in honour of Sydney racing media figures Ken Callander and Max Presnell.

The event distance also increased from 1500m to 1600m and is run at set weights by three-year-olds.

Prior to 2022, it ran earlier as a lead-up to the now defunct Bondi Stakes that ran from 2019-21. During that time both Peltzer (2020) and Hilal (2021) completed the Stan Fox Stakes – Bondi Stakes double.

Notable past winners include Lonhro (2001), Kenwood Melody (1998), General Nediym (1997), Octagonal (1995) and Show County (1989).

Along with the Spring Champion Stakes and Callander-Presnell, the other seven-figure event on the Randwick race card that day is the now Group 2 $2 million The Invitation (1400m) for fillies and mares.

The newly created $500,000 Tapp-Craig (1400m) event held a fortnight earlier offers a Callander-Presnell ballot exemption to the first, second and third placegetters.

Ohope (2025) was the last horse to complete the Tapp-Craig – Callander-Presnell double.

The 2022 Callander-Presnell winner Golden Mile travelled up for the event on the back of a lead-up win in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) over the mile in Melbourne.

The Callander-Presnell 2022 form was franked with the runner-up Communist returning the following autumn to win the 2023 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

2026 Callander-Presnell Form

The Callander-Presnell form guide is an invaluable resource for punters assessing the chances of runners in this historic Sydney spring feature. Run over 1600m at Royal Randwick, the Group 3 Callander-Presnell attracts a competitive mix of established stakes performers, progressive middle-distance gallopers, and horses on the rise through the grades. The form guide provides key information including recent race performances, career statistics, track and distance records, barrier draws, jockey and trainer combinations, and betting market movements. By carefully analysing the Callander-Presnell form guide, punters can identify the runners best suited to the Randwick mile and uncover value in the betting markets.

What Punters Should Look for in the Callander-Presnell Form Guide:

  • Strong mile form – Three-year-olds with proven performances over 1600m often have a distinct advantage in the Callander-Presnell.
  • Randwick record – Previous success at Royal Randwick can be a key indicator, particularly for young horses that thrive on the spacious circuit.
  • Recent black-type performances – Runners coming through Listed, Group 3, Group 2, or Group 1 races typically bring the strongest credentials.
  • Spring racing form – Horses racing consistently well throughout the Sydney and Melbourne spring carnivals are often among the leading contenders.
  • Class drops – Gallopers dropping back from tougher Group races can be well placed against this level of opposition.
  • 1600m to 2000m profile – The race often suits horses with proven form around the mile through to middle-distance trips.
  • Barrier draw – An advantageous gate can help runners secure an economical run and avoid covering extra ground.
  • Track conditions – Assess whether runners perform best on firm, soft, or heavy tracks, particularly given Sydney’s variable spring weather.
  • Jockey and trainer combinations – Leading stables and top riders frequently target the Callander-Presnell with quality spring campaigners.

2026 Callander-Presnell Nominations

Nominations for the Callander-Presnell in 2026 are taken the Monday of race week with the early entries to be listed below.

Stan Fox Stakes / Callander-Presnell Race History

The inaugural winner of the Stan Fox Stakes was Hydahban when the event was first held as a Principal race over 1200m in 1975.

The status and distance of the race remained the same up until 1981 when the length was increased to 1400m and then in 1985 it became a Listed race. Not long after in 1989 the event gained Group 3 status before finally being installed as a Group 2 event in 1996. It was downgraded back to a Group 3 ahead of the 2026 edition.

The race was not held in 2007 due to the outbreak of equine influenza in Australia at the time.

In 2022 the event was moved to late October, the distance increased from 1500m to 1600m, and prize money increased to $1 million to replace the Bondi Stakes as the premier Sydney race for three-year-olds over the spring with that year’s Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile saluting for the punters.
