The Silver Eagle is a $1 million Special Condition race for four-year-olds held at Randwick in October as a lead-up to the $10 million The Golden Eagle.
The Silver Eagle is one of the newer races on the Australian Racing Calendar. Part of the wider The Everest Carnival, the Special Conditions feature race runs at Royal Randwick in October and now offers $1 million in prize money.
Inaugurated in 2019 when the favourite The Inevitable saluted for the punters the Silver Eagle is run over 1300m at set weights plus penalties and is open only to four-year-old horses.
The half-a-million-dollar showdown takes place on the same day as the coveted Caulfield Guineas Day card in Melbourne.
In 2023 the Silver Eagle will take place on The Everest Day headlined by the $20 million The Everest (1200m) and the Group 1 $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m) which replaces the George Main Stakes.
The event serves as the key lead-up into the $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) held at Rosehill at the end of October with the Silver Eagle winner, second and third place-getter all gaining a ballot free ride into that race.
The 2021 Silver Eagle form was franked with the third place-getter Count De Rupee running second next-up in that year’s Golden Eagle results before his $1 million The Gong win at Kembla Grange.
In 2023 Vilana won the Silver Eagle before success in the $1 million The Hunter at Newcastle later that spring.
The 2023 Silver Eagle took place at Randwick on The Everest Day on Saturday October 14th, 2023 and was won by the Chris Waller-trained mare Vienna Princess ($15) in an impressive upset.

Stellar edition of the million-dollar Silver Eagle and Yellow Brick looks a huge hope to finally shrug that place-getter status. The talented The Mission four-year-old from Toowoomba has put his trainers Tony & Maddysen Sears on the map with a host of impressive if not frustratingly runs. Was runner-up in the summer’s $2 million Magic Millions Guineas at the Gold Coast, won the Group 3 GC Guineas fresh at the Sunshine Coast in May and has placed second in his subsequent three starts including a devastatingly close effort behind Rediener in the Group 3 Gunsynd at Eagle Farm in June. That form has been franked with the winner taking out the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) a couple of weeks back. Yellow Brick meanwhile ran second fresh in the Listed Weetwood Handicap at his home track with 58kg. He went down a nostril flare as the beaten odds-on fancy and gets the chance to atone heading to the big city now. Barrier five, comes back a little in weight and Craig Williams in the saddle is a big plus.
The spring’s Silver Eagle field features the best four-year-old horses from Australia heading towards a shot at the lucrative $10 million The Golden Eagle.
The Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes held at Rosehill in September serves as a nice lead-up race for four-year-olds heading into the Silver Eagle field.
The Silver Eagle 2023 race field will be confirmed on the Wednesday of race week and published below as soon as available.
The 2023 Silver Eagle final field features a capacity line-up of in-form four-year-olds including the James Cummings-trained Pericles chasing a third win on the trot after his Group 2 Tramway success last start and the talented Toowoomba galloper Yellow Brick racing in Sydney off his good form at home in Queensland.
