WA expat and spring revelation, Cosmic Crusader, etched his name into Australian racing history, producing a brilliant finishing burst to capture a three-quarter length victory in the 2026 Ladbrokes Cox Plate results and claim the first ever edition of the ‘Race Where Legends Are Made’ run at Flemington.

The outstanding six-year-old gelding delivered a defining victory for trainer Andrea Leek and jockey William Pike, charging over the top of a high-class field in the 106th running of the Group 1 $6 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) to defeat the Chris Waller-trained duo of Birdman and favourite Aeliana in one of the most anticipated editions of the time-honoured classic in recent memory.
Already a Group 1 winner in Melbourne this spring courtesy of his Turnbull Stakes success, Cosmic Crusader confirmed his status among the nation’s elite weight-for-age horses with a performance that showcased exactly why his connections had targeted Australia’s premier middle-distance race for months.
Cosmic Crusader Peaks on the Biggest Stage
Starting at generous Cox Plate odds of $9.50, Cosmic Crusader received the genuine tempo his connections had hoped for as the speed horses ensured a truly run contest from the outset.
As the leaders began to feel the pressure approaching the famous Flemington straight, the ‘Wizard of the West’, Pike angled the Kiwi-bred son of Maurice into clear running before launching his challenge.
The response was immediate.
Cosmic Crusader quickly descended on the leaders and powered clear late to defeat the game Underwood Stakes champ Birdman ($11) by three-quarters of a length, with class mare Aeliana ($4.20F) producing another outstanding performance in third to complete the Cox Plate 2026 trifecta as jockey James McDonald was denied a historic fifth consecutive victory in the race.

The triumph was the gelding’s 12th career victory from 24 starts and elevated his earnings beyond $6.7 million.
Leek’s Dream Realised

An emotional Andrea Leek struggled to comprehend the magnitude of the result after saddling her first Cox Plate winner.
“A miracle. He’s just an iron horse. What a champion. What a ride by Willie Pike,” she told Racing Victoria.
“Thanks to the Peters’ for giving him to me and trusting in me.”
The fairytale result carried extra significance for the emerging trainer.
“I said before I feel like I’m an imposter,” she admitted.
“To step in and have a horse like this in the early stages of my career, I’m very lucky. I couldn’t be happier.”
Cox Plate the Long-Term Target
Leek revealed Saturday’s success had been part of a carefully planned campaign dating back months.
“It was,” she confirmed.
“Maybe the Caulfield Cup [where Cosmic Crusader ran 4th last Saturday] was a slip-in run.
“We were always hoping he was good enough for a Cox Plate, and he is.”
The trainer admitted she believed the horse was not quite at his peak in the Caulfield Cup but had him exactly where she wanted him for Flemington.
“He’s an amazing horse,” she said with pride.
“I said to Bob [Peters, the owner] this morning that I think I had him a little bit flat for the Caulfield Cup and may have done too much on the Tuesday.
“He was better going into today.”
“I knew going into today I had him cherry ripe.”
Leek had also hoped for rain to assist her star gelding.
“I was praying for rain, but we didn’t get it,” she said.
“He was still too good.”
Perfect Tactics Produce Perfect Result
The race unfolded almost exactly as Leek had anticipated.
“Exactly how it turned out,” she said.
“He was expected to get back but that leader flew along.”
Rather than forcing Cosmic Crusader into the race early, the stable deliberately allowed him to settle and chase.
“I wanted him to be back because he loves the thrill of the kill and getting past them,” she explained.
“That’s what we do in trackwork.
“He’s always got a bunny to chase and that is what he loves.”
“That is what he needed and he got it today.”
A Champion in the Making
Leek revealed she had identified Cox Plate potential in Cosmic Crusader as far back as his winter campaign.
“I did,” she said.
“He wasn’t over the distance that he needed to be at that stage.
“What he was doing then was extraordinary.
“He’s just an iron horse and he has just got better and better and better.”
Asked where the Cox Plate victory ranked against his Turnbull Stakes triumph, Leek admitted the reality was still sinking in.
“I don’t know,” she said, still in shock over the achievement.
“It hasn’t sunk in.
“It just seems too incredible at the moment.”
Pike Delivers Another Big-Race Masterclass
Western Australian superstar William Pike was visibly emotional after securing one of the biggest victories of his decorated career.
His immediate reaction said it all.
“Cosmic Crusader, woohoo!” Pike cheered.
“Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.”
Pike admitted winning races like the Cox Plate still feels almost surreal.
“I don’t ever dream of winning these races because it’s always too far to reach,” the veteran hoop said.
“So, to get here today…
“I left last week a little disappointed, but he’s backed up and he’s turned up.”
Patience Rewarded
Pike believed the key to victory came from remaining calm during the middle stages of the race.
“He’s come off their backs, and I knew I was a chance,” he said.
“I rode better, I was calmer through the first half to the top of the straight and he was strong through the line.”
The jockey credited the entire team behind the horse.
“Thanks very much to the whole team,” Pike said.
“Look how many runs he’s had, he’s just so good.”
Historic Flemington Cox Plate

The emotion of the moment eventually got the better of Pike after crossing the line.
“I had in my mind over the line, I’m not much of a saluter,” he said.
“I’m like, ‘don’t salute, don’t salute’.
“Then the moment gets the better of you, and you stand up and you salute and you carry on.”
The significance of winning the only Cox Plate likely ever staged at Flemington was not lost on the champion jockey.
“It’s amazing, it’s infectious,” he said.
“Big crowd, an iconic day.
“Most likely the only ever Cox Plate to be run here.
“So it’s nice that we get to etch our name in there.”
Waller Pair Chase Hard
Runner-up Birdman produced arguably the best run of his campaign to finish second.
Jockey Ben Melham was full of praise after the race.
“Really proud of the horse,” he said after the race.
“He got it all right today.
“We had a beautiful run, he burst through to win, but ran into a better one on the day.”
Third-placed favourite Aeliana also lost no admirers.
“She was huge,” jockey McDonald said.
“Very proud of her.
“She did a good job.”
Melbourne Cup Hopefuls Impress
Several Melbourne Cup-bound runners emerged from the race with their reputations enhanced.
Saint George finished strongly into fifth off a quick back-up after his brave Caulfield Cup second last weekend prompting Blake Shinn to name him a danger in the upcoming 3200m classic at the track on November 3.
“A pretty good Melbourne Cup trial,” Shinn said of the Maher-trained import who is at a current quote of $13 to win the ‘Race That Stops a Nation’ this year through Ladbrokes.
“He got beat by the four best horses in the country.
“Ran super. Bring on the Cup.”
Likewise, the fellow Maher-trained Middle Earth caught the eye late according to Mark Zahra.
“It should have him spot on for where he is going,” Zahra said.
“On Tuesday week.”

Cosmic Crusader Delivers Career Peak
Already a Turnbull Stakes winner this spring, Cosmic Crusader has now added one of the sport’s most prestigious prizes to his growing résumé.
The victory further cements the remarkable rise of both horse and trainer, while vindicating a campaign centred around peaking on Cox Plate Day.
For Andrea Leek, it was a dream realised.
For William Pike, another iconic major.
And for Cosmic Crusader, it was the performance that transformed him from an outstanding racehorse into a Cox Plate champion.
On a historic day at Flemington, he proved too strong, too tough, and simply too good.
