The more the Cox Plate 2026 field is analysed, the clearer one thing becomes: this afternoon’s edition of Australia’s weight-for-age championship is unlikely to be a sit-and-sprint affair.
With the iconic race shifting to Flemington Racecourse for the first time in history, punters have spent the week debating barriers, track patterns and form lines. But arguably the most important piece of the puzzle is the anticipated Cox Plate 2026 speed map, which points towards a genuinely fast-run contest that could turn the race into a survival test over the famous 2040 metre journey.
And if the pace pressure eventuates as expected, a pair of overlooked roughies could be the ones giving favourite backers a few nervous moments.

Cox Plate 2026 Speed Map: Expect Early Fireworks
The speed battle looks fierce on paper.
Land Legend has drawn barrier 12 and appears almost certain to roll forward, while fellow on-speed runners Light Infantry Man and Blind Raise are also expected to press on from wider alleys.
The result could be a genuinely run Cox Plate from the outset, creating a race where positioning, stamina and tactical speed become every bit as important as raw talent.
Expected Cox Plate Settling Positions

- No. 2 Light Infantry Man (11)
- No. 12 Blind Raise (9)

- No. 5 Cosmic Crusader (8)
- No. 6 Birdman (1)
Off Pace:
- No. 3 Sir Delius (5)
- No. 7 Land Legend (12)
- No. 10 Aeliana (10)
- No. 11 Warwoven (2)
Backmarkers:
- No. 8 Middle Earth (7)
- No. 9 Saint George (6)
The strong tempo could play directly into the hands of horses drawn to enjoy economical runs in transit, while also bringing some of the race’s proven stayers and late closers firmly into contention.
Forgotten Roughies Could Cause a Shock
While much of the pre-race focus has centred on Sir Delius, Aeliana, Warwoven and Ceolwulf, there are two runners at huge odds capable of making life interesting for favourites.
No. 7 Land Legend ($46)
Few horses arrive with more intrigue than Land Legend.
The Ciaron Maher-trained import stunned racing fans when he led throughout and ran record-breaking time winning the Group 1 Might And Power Stakes, proving he can sustain an enormous gallop under pressure.
Interestingly, both of his on-speed Australian victories have come in track-record performances, suggesting there may be a clear blueprint to getting the best out of him.
If Ethan Brown can cross comfortably and dictate proceedings, punters dismissing the 45/1 chance could find themselves sweating turning for home.
The obvious concern is whether rivals allow him the same freedom he enjoyed at Caulfield.
| 7. Land Legend (12) J: Ethan Brown 59kg 9×001 T: Ciaron Maher | |||
| At the latest run won by a head in the G1 Might And Power Stakes at Caulfield on October 10 over 2000m defeating Sheza Alibi carrying 59kg at $61. Before that 11th of 13 in the G3 Jra Cup at Caulfield on September 27 over 2000m, 9 len behind Royal Supremacy with 56.5kg at $12. Shock winner in track record time latest, not sure they’ll let him pinch this one. | |||
No. 2 Light Infantry Man ($19)
Another runner who could be massively overlooked is dual Australian Cup winner Light Infantry Man.
The evergreen Maher-trained galloper excels at Flemington and boasts proven track-and-distance credentials.
His brave Turnbull Stakes placing suggested he’s still racing in top order, and Saturday’s anticipated speed battle may actually play perfectly into his hands.
Rather than having to generate his own tempo, he could sit outside Land Legend and apply pressure throughout, potentially giving himself every chance to stick on late.
At his current price, he’s one of the genuine value runners in the race.
| 2. Light Infantry Man (11) J: Harry Coffey 59kg 5×482 T: Ciaron Maher | |||
| Most recently set the pace for much of the race 2nd of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, on rain affected going; 1.75 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 58kg at $26. Before that 8th of 10 in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at this track on September 12 over 1600m, 5.5 len behind Sheza Alibi with 59kg at $41. Loves Flemington, was game last time, can give cheek. | |||
Can the Three-Year-Olds Do It Again?
History says don’t underestimate the youngsters in a Cox Plate.
The rolls of honour feature three-year-old winners including So You Think, Shamus Award and Savabeel, while Anamoe arguably should have won the race as a three-year-old before returning to claim it the following season.
This year’s youthful brigade is headed by the exciting pair of Warwoven and Blind Raise, who quinellaed the Caulfield Guineas after also producing elite performances throughout the spring.
No. 11 Warwoven
The Bjorn Baker-trained colt has rapidly emerged as one of the stars of the season following dominant victories in both the Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas.
Perhaps most importantly for Saturday, those wins came in races run at strong tempos, suggesting the step to a genuinely-run Cox Plate may suit rather than hinder him.
From barrier two, Rachel King should enjoy an ideal run tucked behind the speed. If he receives clear galloping room at the right time, he shapes as one of the most dangerous horses in the race.
| 11. Warwoven (2) J: Rachel King 49.5kg x5111 T: Bjorn Baker | |||
| Form hard to fault. Most recently favourite; came from midfield and won by 1.75 len in the G1 Caulfield Guineas on October 10 over 1600m defeating Blind Raise with 57kg at $2.40. The run before that favourite; won by 3 len in the G1 Golden Rose Stakes at Rosehill on September 26 over 1400m defeating St Gotthard with 56.5kg at $6. Very talented 3yo, draws perfectly, this is the acid test. | |||
No. 12 Blind Raise
The market may have overlooked Blind Raise slightly.
His Guineas second behind Warwoven was full of merit after absorbing pressure throughout, and unlike some rivals, he has already shown he’s capable of sustaining speed against quality opposition.
The concern is obvious: he may find himself caught up in an even more brutal speed battle on Saturday.
If that happens, the final 200 metres could become a bridge too far.
| 12. Blind Raise (9) J: Jamie Melham 49.5kg 9×112 T: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young | |||
| Racing well recently. Last start held ground to the line 2nd of 11 in the G1 Caulfield Guineas on October 10 over 1600m, 1.75 len behind Warwoven carrying 57kg at $3.10. The start before that tracked the speed and boxed on steadily; won by 2.75 len in the G3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude on September 19 over 1400m defeating Tornado Valley with 57kg at $2.40. Very brave in the Guineas, wouldn’t surprise if he measured right up. | |||
Sir Delius Remains the Benchmark
Despite all the speed-map discussion, Sir Delius still profiles as the horse to beat.
The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained entire has been aimed at the Cox Plate all preparation and reaches his favoured third-up stage on Saturday.
His Queen Elizabeth Stakes victory in autumn remains arguably the strongest peak rating of any runner in the field.
Barrier five should allow Craig Williams to secure the perfect stalking position just behind the leaders before launching at the top of the straight.
The only question is whether he has returned this campaign in quite the same form he displayed earlier in the year.
If he has, the rest have a serious horse to catch.
| 3. Sir Delius (5) J: Craig Williams 59kg 31×44 T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | |||
| Third-up today and won third-up in the past. First-up 4th of 10 in the G1 Makybe Diva Stakes at this track on September 12 over 1600m, 4 len behind Sheza Alibi with 59kg at $5. Second run from a spell 4th of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, on a wet track; 3.5 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 59kg at $3. Been set for this, set up is perfect, best horse in the race if he brings it. | |||
Aeliana’s Flemington Factor
Chris Waller’s mare Aeliana remains one of the most fascinating runners.
Her Turnbull Stakes effort suggested she is building nicely towards her grand final, and with James McDonald aboard, she is guaranteed plenty of support.
However, Saturday’s conditions may be crucial.
Aeliana appears at her absolute best when there is some give in the ground, and a fast Flemington surface could slightly diminish her advantage.
The positive is that Flemington’s spacious layout should suit her racing pattern better than Moonee Valley ever would have.
Expect her to be charging home late.
| 10. Aeliana (10) J: James McDonald 57kg 1×023 T: Chris Waller | |||
| Racing well recently. Last start 3rd of 13 in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at this track on October 3 over 2000m, on a wet track; 2.75 len behind Cosmic Crusader with 57kg at $3.80. The start before that 2nd in a small field in the G2 7 Stakes at Randwick on September 19 over 1600m, 1.3 len behind Autumn Glow carrying 57kg at $21. Building beautifully, will be charging home. | |||
Ceolwulf Flying but One Query Remains
Few horses enter the race in more consistent form than Ceolwulf.
His recent performances behind the country’s best, Autumn Glow, have been excellent, and the Joseph Pride-trained star gets every opportunity from barrier three.
The key question punters need to answer is simple: can he replicate his elite mile form at the end of a genuinely-run 2040 metres?
If the answer is yes, he’s right in the finish.
If not, the final 200 metres may expose him.
| 1. Ceolwulf (3) J: Chad Schofield 59kg 52322 T: Joseph Pride | |||
| Form hard to fault. Last start 2nd in a small field in the G1 King Charles Iii Stakes at Randwick on October 17 over 1609m, slow going 2.25 len behind Autumn Glow carrying 59kg at $4.80. The race before that 2nd of 16 in the G1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick on October 3 over 1600m, on a slow track; 1.75 len behind God’s Window with 59kg at $9.50. Racing as well as ever, gets a smother and explodes late. | |||
Don’t Forget Birdman
One runner quietly flying under the radar is Birdman.
The Waller-trained galloper was dominant winning the Underwood Stakes and then far from disgraced when third in the Might And Power.
Barrier one ensures Ben Melham saves every centimetre of ground, and if the race unfolds perfectly, Birdman could be the one storming through late at double-figure odds.
His Underwood performance alone gives him claims of winning.
| 6. Birdman (1) J: Ben Melham 59kg 1×613 T: Chris Waller | |||
| Form hard to fault. At the latest run 3rd in a small field in the G1 Might And Power Stakes at Caulfield on October 10 over 2000m, 1.4 len behind Land Legend carrying 59kg at $4.40. The run before that won by 1.75 len in the G1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield on September 19 over 1800m defeating Cosmic Crusader carrying 59kg at $6. Like the draw, can improve again and the Underwood win was dominant. | |||
Cox Plate 2026 Predictions
The speed map suggests this year’s race could be one of the most genuinely-run Cox Plates in recent memory, and that should ensure every horse gets their chance.
Top 5 Selections
1. Sir Delius
The proven weight-for-age star gets the ideal setup, the perfect draw and reaches his preferred third-up stage.
2. Warwoven
The three-year-old receives every favour from gate two and looks capable of developing into a genuine superstar.
3. Aeliana
James McDonald, Chris Waller and a Flemington setup that suits her style make her impossible to ignore.
4. Birdman
The value runner from barrier one who only needs to return to his Underwood Stakes peak.
5. Ceolwulf
Ultra-consistent and perfectly drawn, but must answer the 2040m question.
