The Rosehill Gold Cup is a $750,000 Special Conditions race run and won in late October or early November on Golden Eagle Day in Sydney.
Part of the wider $60 million The Everest Racing Carnival, the spring feature is run alongside the lucrative $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) for four-year-olds and the $3 million Winners Stakes (1300m) race renamed each season in honour of the previous year’s The Everest winner.
On the same date in Melbourne Flemington Racecourse is host to the coveted Victoria Derby Day program that kicks off the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
A quality handicap event open to middle-distance horses and stayers aged three and above, the Rosehill Gold Cup takes place over 2000m.
The lucrative showdown also offers a bonus to any horse that can win it along with at least one of four other lead-up spring races: Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m), the Group 2 Hill Stakes (1800m), as well as either the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m), or the St Leger (2600m). In 2021 Think It Over completed the Hill Stakes – Craven Plate – Rosehill Gold Cup treble!
Any horse that ran in any of those races without winning before saluting in the Rosehill Gold Cup results is also eligible for a $100,000 bonus.
In 2021 there was also an additional $500,000 bonus for eligible horses on offer in the Rosehill Gold Cup that Think It Over claimed.
The 2021 Rosehill Gold Cup form was franked with the winner Think It Over returning in the autumn of 2022 to enjoy a stellar campaign highlighted by his Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) victory.
Horses out of the Rosehill Gold Cup field may continue onto Melbourne the following Saturday and contest the Group 1 VRC Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.
The 2023 Rosehill Gold Cup took place at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday November 4th, 2023 as part of Sydney’s Golden Eagle Day card and was won in an upset by Team Hawkes’ veteran eight-year-old Wild Planet ($26).

A couple of genuine contenders in the Rosehill Gold Cup field this year but like the chances of the John O’Shea-trained Stroke Of Luck to post back-to-back wins after the Fastnet Rock four-year-old took out a Benchmark 88 at Randwick last time out. He carried 59kg to a 2000m win and will be airborne down to 52kg with Zac Lloyd (booked to ride Athabascan on Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup if the horse makes the field) also full of confidence with the light weight. Proven at the distance, is a multiple Group 1 performer and finished third in the Queensland Derby at blow out odds in the winter. Big claims here at a nice price.
