So You Are has done everything asked of him this spring, extending his winning streak and strengthening his case for a coveted start in next Tuesday’s Group 1 $10.2 million Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) with a courageous victory in Wednesday’s 2026 Ladbrokes Bendigo Cup results.

The Bjorn Baker-trained son of So You Think made it four consecutive black-type victories when he justified favouritism in this year’s Group 3 $500,000 Ladbrokes Bendigo Cup (2400m), but despite the success, his Melbourne Cup fate remains in the hands of the handicapper after beginning the week sitting 28th in the order of entry.
While the Bendigo Cup is not one of the official Melbourne Cup ballot exemption races, the performance could prove enough to earn the progressive stayer the weight penalty required to force his way into the final field.
Sent out the $3.60 favourite, So You Are was given a perfect ride by Rachel King, who made full use of the inside barrier to secure an ideal position just behind the speed throughout the mile and a half contest.
After settling beautifully behind leader The Euphrates, King stalked the pace before peeling into the clear approaching the home turn.
When asked to go, So You Are quickly put the race to bed.
The five-year-old kicked clear at the 200m mark and, although tiring slightly late, had done enough to hold off the fast-finishing Berkeley Square by three-quarters of a length, with Litzdeel another half-length away in third.

The victory elevated the gelding’s earnings beyond $1.26 million and improved his career record to eight wins and 12 placings from 28 starts.
Melbourne Cup Dream Still Alive
Speaking after the victory, Baker’s racing manager Luke Hilton said the horse had done everything within his power to earn a Melbourne Cup start.
“He can’t do any more, it’s been a bit frustrating,” Hilton told Racing Victoria.
“He’s done everything he can, the horse, he deserved to be there and hopefully that’s enough to get him in.”
Hilton praised the gelding’s latest performance and the consistency he has displayed throughout an outstanding preparation.
“Great campaign, he’s just got better and better each time,” he said.
“He relaxed beautifully today, gates are a big help, he was able to get a good run in the race and Rach put him into the race when she was ready to go and he was tough.”
Connections specifically targeted the Bendigo Cup after realising victory in the ATC St Leger Stakes would not be enough by itself to guarantee a Melbourne Cup berth.
“We thought he may get in after winning the St Leger, but he needed a few more points,” Hilton explained.
“We had a look at the Moonee Valley Cup and Bjorn and Mr Ramsay put their heads together and came up with this plan today and it’s come off.
“Let’s hope it’s enough.”
Whether the performance results in a sufficient penalty now becomes one of the major talking points heading towards Melbourne Cup final acceptances which are taken at 4:30pm (AEDT) on Saturday.
Hilton also highlighted the ongoing development of the gelding, whose progression this campaign has been remarkable.
“He was very green and credit to Stirling Osborne and the guys when we got him, they said that he was learning and still needed to mature and he’s just got better and better each time,” he added.
The stable had long wondered whether Melbourne racing conditions would suit.
“Rach and Bjorn have done a lot of work with him,” Hilton said.
“His form was a little bit questionable Melbourne way, that was probably the only glitch that we thought he might have, but he really handled it well today.
“Credit to the team, they’ve done a great job at home with him, and he’s getting better.”
Melbourne Cup Distance No Concern
Should So You Are secure a Cup berth, connections are confident the rise to two miles will suit.
“I think it will,” Hilton said with confidence.
“Everything we throw at him, he ran 2600 the other day and was pulling away.”
One factor potentially working against him when the handicapper assesses the race is the fact he seldom wins by big margins.
“He doesn’t win by big margins, which probably counts against him in terms of getting a little bit more from the handicappers,” Hilton said.
“But he just keeps doing it so you can’t knock winning form.”
King Executes Perfect Ride
Winning jockey Rachel King was delighted with how the race unfolded after drawing favourably.
“Perfectly,” she said post-victory.
“Nice gate obviously helps, but he had a couple of runs in Melbourne and probably not run up to standard before so it was good to see him get it done the other way around.”
King said the horse’s racing style continues to be one of his greatest assets.
“He’s just a horse in really good form,” she said.
“He’s tough, he puts himself on speed, he makes life easy and he doesn’t want to let one get past him.”
The jockey has noticed substantial improvement in the gelding throughout the preparation.
“Even from his first start back this prep when I rode him, he was probably doing things a little upside down and just needed to refine his craft and the more racing he’s had the better he’s got,” she said.
As for his Melbourne Cup prospects?
“Fingers crossed they’re nice to us now and let us in,” King said.
The Bendigo Cup capped an extraordinary staying campaign for the gelding following victories in the Listed Randwick City Cup (2400m), Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m), Group 3 ATC St Leger Stakes (2600m) and now Wednesday’s all-important Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m).
The sequence has transformed So You Are from a progressive staying handicapper into one of the most talked-about bubble horses heading towards the Melbourne Cup 2026.
Cup Fate Now Awaits the Handicapper
There is one crucial caveat.
Unlike races such as the Geelong Cup, The Bart Cummings, Archer Stakes or Moonee Valley Gold Cup, the Bendigo Cup does not provide a ballot-free exemption into the Melbourne Cup field.
As a result, So You Are’s place in next Tuesday’s race remains uncertain despite another black-type victory.
Connections have indicated the gelding likely requires around a 1.5kg penalty to safely move into the final 24 runners, while withdrawals above him in the order of entry could also aid his cause.
One thing is certain.
With four consecutive stakes wins, over $1.2 million in prizemoney and a staying profile tailor-made for two miles, So You Are has made the strongest possible late case for inclusion.
Now Bjorn Baker, Rachel King and connections must wait and see whether Australia’s handicappers agree.
If he gets the call-up, few horses will head into the 2026 Melbourne Cup in better form.
So You Are is currently installed at $26 in the latest all-in Melbourne Cup odds at Ladbrokes.
