Open only to five-year-old horses, the $2 million showdown runs at Rosehill Gardens as part of Golden Gift Day. The meeting takes place on the Saturday after the Melbourne Cup and runs on the same date as VRC Champions Stakes Day at Flemington.

Along with the now Group 3 $1 million Golden Gift (1100m) for two-year-olds, the other feature on the card is the Group 2 $500,000 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m).

The Five Diamonds took place for the first time in 2022 and was added to the Sydney spring line-up at the same time as the now Listed $3 million The Big Dance (1600m), which runs on Melbourne Cup Day on the first Tuesday of November each year.

The Five Diamonds officially gained Listed status in 2024 the same year Sydney’s $20 million The Everest became a Group 1 race before another upgrade to Group 3 status in 2026.

In 2022 Sibaaq ran third in the first edition of The Big Dance before a second in The Five Diamonds results.

Run over 1800m, The Five Diamonds is run at set weights plus penalties and serves as a nice attraction for five-year-old horses that may otherwise have been retired.

The race also follows on from the $10 million The Golden Eagle (1500m) for four-year-olds run in the spring.

The $1 million Five Diamonds Prelude (1500m) held at Rosehill in October on the same day as Melbourne’s Cox Plate Day card is the key lead-up into the race.

Ellsberg in 2022 became the inaugural winner of the Five Diamonds Prelude – The Five Diamonds race double.

He also won the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick earlier that spring.

The Five Diamonds 2022 form was franked with the third place-getter Laws Of Indices heading overseas next start to run third in the Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m) that December.

In 2023 the Five Diamonds third placegetter Detonator Jack went on to win the lucrative $1 million The Gong race at Kembla Grange a fortnight later.

2026 The Five Diamonds Form Guide

The Five Diamonds form guide is an essential resource for punters analysing one of Australia’s richest races restricted to five-year-olds. Run over 1800 metres at Rosehill Gardens under set weights plus penalties conditions, the Group 3 The Five Diamonds attracts a quality field of established stakes performers, emerging middle-distance stars, and horses reaching the peak of their careers. The form guide provides detailed information on each runner’s recent performances, distance and track records, barrier draw, jockey and trainer combinations, speed ratings, and betting market movements. By studying The Five Diamonds form guide, punters can identify the runners best suited to the unique conditions of this lucrative spring feature and uncover value among the talented field of five-year-olds.

What Punters Should Look for in The Five Diamonds Form Guide:

  • 1800m credentials – Horses with proven form at 1800m and beyond often have the ideal blend of stamina and acceleration required for the race.
  • Rosehill form – Previous success at Rosehill can be a major advantage, particularly for runners familiar with the track’s layout and racing patterns.
  • Set weights plus penalties profile – Assess how each horse is weighted under the race conditions, especially those carrying penalties for recent black-type success.
  • Lead-up race form – Key lead-ups often include the Craven Plate, Hill Stakes, Five Diamonds Prelude, Alan Brown Stakes, and other spring middle-distance features.
  • Black-type performances – Horses with proven Group and Listed race form generally bring the strongest credentials into The Five Diamonds.
  • Recent sectionals – Strong closing splits can identify runners capable of producing the turn of foot often needed around Rosehill.
  • Barrier draw – An advantageous gate can help horses secure economical runs and avoid covering extra ground.
  • Track conditions – Evaluate whether runners perform best on Good, Soft, or Heavy tracks, particularly if Sydney weather impacts race week.
  • Racing pattern – Understanding which horses lead, settle on pace, or finish from the back can help predict the likely tempo and race shape.
  • Trainer and jockey combinations – Leading Sydney stables and top jockeys often target The Five Diamonds with horses specifically aimed at the lucrative feature.
  • Five-year-old form lines – As the race is exclusively restricted to five-year-olds, comparing established form among horses of the same age can be particularly valuable.
  • Betting market support – Significant moves in The Five Diamonds betting markets can indicate stable confidence and highlight runners expected to perform well.
