The The Nivison is a Group 3 sprint currently run at Rosehill Racecourse (moved from Royal Randwick ahead of the 2023 edition) in early to mid-October as part of the new-look Hill Stakes Day program.

Team Hawkes’ consistent four-year-old, Gangsta Granny ($2.10F), continued her strong spring campaign narrowly holding on to deny the late flying Monte Supreme to salute for the punters in the 2025 The Nivison results and secure a deserved Group 3 victory.

Run under set weights plus penalties conditions, The Nivison is restricted to mares aged four years and older. It is raced over 1200m and offers $250,000 in total prize money.

The Nivison is a key support act on an exciting race card now headlined by the lucrative $2 million Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m) for Spring Cup-bound stayers.

Potential lead-up races include the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) and Newcastle’s Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m).

After contesting The Nivison mares may target a next-up run in the Group 2 $500,000 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill or even the $1 million The Gong (1600m) at Kembla Grange.

Another potential next-up option for mares out of The Nivison field is the Group 3 Begonia Belle Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on Derby Day and Minhaaj (2021) was the last to do the double.

Mares may also head to the $2 million The Invitation (1400m) at Randwick on The Everest Day.

In 2023 the The Nivison winner Magic Time ran third next-up in The Invitation results that spring before a Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes victory next start. She further franked the form the following autumn winning the 2024 All Aged Stakes.

The 2025 The Nivison ran on Saturday October 11, 2025 at Rosehill Gardens on Hill Stakes Day and saw the Hawkes Racing trained Gangsta Granny ($2.10F) narrowly hold on and salute for favourite backers.

No doubt the favourite GANGSTA GRANNY (5) brings in some strong form lines and will take some beating but I’m actually taking her on and think the consistent IN FLIGHT (7) presents as the value in this year’s The Nivison. Joe Pride’s Flying Artie mare is a two-time winner from give goes here at Rosehill and while she’s yet to get a six-furlong win on the CV I think this shapes up as her best chance. On fire in the winter, she strung together three on the trot in three separate states to show off her versatility track-wise including her Group 3 John Monash win over New York Lustre at Caulfield. She caught my eye fresh against a field of The Everest hopes in the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) finishing a mid-field sixth to Headwall but was far from disgraced under two lengths beaten. Presents fitter for the run against arguably easier rivals here back against her own kind. Kept fit with a recent trial she keeps on 56kg with Jay Ford retaining the ride and just needs to extend the extra furlong now.

The Nivison 2025 final field features a strong line-up of mares led in betting by the Team Hawkes trained Gangsta Granny coming off a third in the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes at the track and trip.

The Nivison History

The Nivison was inaugurated in 1994 as the Tarien Quality Handicap. It was originally named in honour of renowned mare Tarien, who took out the Warwick Stakes twice and also the 1953 George Main Stakes and Craven Plate. The Nivison received its current name in 1997.

In 2011, the City Tattersalls Club rescheduled their meeting to mid-October. Prior to this, the Nivison was held during September.

Initially a non-black type event, the Nivison was upgraded to Listed status in 1997. In 2013 it became a Group 3 race and has maintained that status since then.

The Nivison has always been held at Royal Randwick and has always been held over 1200m. The Nivison was not held in 2007 due to the equine influenza.

Notable The Nivison winners include Aunty Mary (1994), Razor Blade (1998), Our Sweet Moss (2005) and Madame Pedrille (2009). The Nivison results and winning times since 2000 are provided below.

The event was moved from Randwick to Rosehill ahead of the 2023 edition.
