Held annually in late December as a key lead-up to the Perth Cup, the Ted Van Heemst Stakes is a 2100m staying event at Ascot Racecourse formerly known as the C.B. Cox Stakes before being renamed in 2016.

Worth $250,000 in prize money, the Group 2 event attracts good staying horses that are suited to the weight-for-age conditions. The Ted Van Heemst Stakes is the ideal lead-up race to the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) held around a fortnight later either on New Year’s Eve or the first week of the New Year at the end of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival.

The 2021 Ted Van Heemst Stakes form was franked with the runner-up Platoon running a next-up third in the Perth Cup trifecta.

The 2022 Ted Van Heemst Stakes ran on Saturday December 17, 2022 and was narrowly won by the in-form Lou Louciani-trained Marocchino ($6.50).

2022 Ted Van Heemst Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Ted Van Heemst Stakes 2022 Tips on the Perth Cup lead-up in WA this summer.

  • To Win: #10 Steinem ($2.80 at time of publish)

Hard to tip against the progressive favourite, the nicely-bred Frankel mare Steinem who hails from the Melbourne Cup winning stables of Ciaron Maher & David Eustace. The duo are master trainers and look to have this five-year-old ready to peak. She was strong here when third at a big price last time out in the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m), which is always a solid form line to follow into the Ted Van Heemst. Same weight for this, but she gets the run of the race from gate three with John Allen retaining the ride. She’s yet to win over a mile, but don’t let that fool you. The extra distance suits as she was making up good ground late last start. Back don’t sack.

2022 Ted Van Heemst Stakes Field

The Ted Van Heemst / CB Cox Stakes field traditionally features the best locally-trained stayers targeting the popular Perth Cup. Horses in the Ted Van Heemst Stakes field come out of summer lead-up races including the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) – formerly the Kingston Town Classic –  in early December or the previous Saturday’s Group 3 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m) over a notably shorter distance.

In 2019, Regal Power completed the Group 1 $1 million Railway Stakes – Ted Van Heemst Stakes double. Truly Great took out the Kingston Town Classic – Ted Van Heemst Stakes double in 2020 before Regal Power did the same in 2021.

The 2022 Ted Van Heemst Stakes field & barriers will be provided here the week of the race once officially announced by Perth Racing.

The Ted Van Heemst Stakes 2022 final field features a quality line-up of potential Perth Cup-bound stayers led in betting by Frankel mare Steinem from the Melbourne Cup winning Maher/Eustace stables who comes off a strong third in the Group 1 Northerly Stakes here last start.

2022 Ted Van Heemst Stakes Nominations

Early nominations for the Ted Van Heemst Stakes in 2022 will be updated here the week of the race.

Ted Van Heemst / CB Cox Stakes History

Inaugurated in 1914 as the Grandstand Plate, the Ted Van Heemst Stakes was renamed in 2016 in honour of Western Australian Racing Hall of Famer Ted Van Heemst and was previously known as the CB Cox Stakes from 1920-2015.

The race was previously contested over 2400m, but was reduced in 2009 after the Perth Cup distance was also cut from a traditional two-mile cup distance (3200m) to the mile and a half (2400m).

The Ted Van Heemst Stakes has held Group 2 status since 1979 and has been won by a number of notable stayers including Eurythmic (1920) who went on to win a host of interstate Group 1 races including the Caulfield Cup (1920), that year’s Melbourne Cup winner Piping Lane (1972), the reigning Cox Plate champion at the time Battle Heights (1974) and more recently Delicacy (2015) who won the following January’s Perth Cup.

The 2019 Ted Van Heemst Stakes winner Regal Power went on to win the following year’s $5 million The All-Star Mile in Melbourne. Regal Power also returned to completed the Kingston Town Classic – Ted Van Heemst Stakes double in 2021.
