The Group 3 2025 Prince Of Wales Stakes is a 1000m sprint held Ascot Racecourse in W.A. during late October or early November leading-up to the Perth Summer Racing Carnival on the same day as Flemington’s VRC Derby Day program in Melbourne on the Saturday prior to the Melbourne Cup.

Run under weight for age conditions, the Prince Of Wales Stakes is open only to horses aged three years and above. There is $200,000 prize money at stake, which is a decent amount in comparison to most other races held in the west during the spring season.
The Prince Of Wales Stakes is one of two Group status races held on the day along with the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m). For this reason, and also it’s suitability as a preparatory race, the Prince Of Wales Stakes tends to attract some top tier local runners.
The Prince Of Wales Stakes is not to be confused with the Group 1 event held at Royal Ascot in England.
Because it is so early in the WA racing season, there aren’t really any reliable lead up races to the Prince Of Wales Stakes. Your best bet for studying form would be to look at non black type events under similar conditions held prior. Even so, it’s possible that a lot of the bigger talents will be first up or near enough to first up in this event.
Following the Prince Of Wales Stakes, horses tend to take a variety of paths including the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) run in late November, which is Perth’s premier sprint race, and the last horse to win both races in the same year was Miss Andretti (2005).
The 2021 Prince Of Wales Stakes form was franked with the winner Elite Street going on to win the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes next start before a third in that year’s Winterbottom Stakes results. Elite Street also returned the following winter to complete the Group 3 Northam Stakes – Roma Cup double.
The 2021 Prince Of Wales Stakes runner-up Stageman meanwhile also finished second in the Group 1 Winterbottom that season.
In 2022 the Prince Of Wales Stakes runner-up This’ll Testya won the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) next-up before further franking the form with a third in that year’s Winterbottom Stakes results.
The recently boosted Group 3 $1.5 million The Gold Rush (1400m) back at the Ascot track in December also makes a later summer target for graduates out of the Prince Of Wales Stakes field.

Prince Of Wales Stakes History
The Prince Of Wales Stakes was inaugurated in 1969. Since then, it has largely been held at Ascot Racecourse, with the exception of 2003, when it was held at Belmont Park.
As the first weight for age race in the end of year season, the Prince Of Wales Stakes has developed a reputation for above-grade quality racing. It has over time evolved into a very important race to watch for form guidance.
Notable Prince Of Wales Stakes winners include Casshoney (1985), Pago’s King (1992), Century Blazer (1995, 96), Secret Remedy (2000, 01), Miss Andretti (2005) and Waratah’s Secret (2010, 11). Idyllic Prince has had a great run in this race, winning in 2007, placing third in 2008, winning in 2009, and receiving second in 2010. Prince Of Wales Stakes results since 2000 are listed below.
From 2016 the distance in the Prince Of Wales Stakes was decreased from 1200 – 1000m, leading to the shorter 58.6 seconds winning time of Rock Magic.
