Oh Diamond Lil ($3.10F) produced a dominant front-running performance to head the 2025 Tibbie Stakes results at Newcastle on Friday, notching her first stakes victory and third consecutive win. The David Pfieffer-trained mare controlled the race from the outset and kicked clear in the straight, defeating Verona Rose and Tuileries, further boosting her value as a broodmare and setting up a promising spring campaign.

The Tibbie Stakes is restricted to mares and fillies and traditionally attracts mainly Sydney-trained hopefuls. Run under set weights plus penalties conditions with total prize money of $250,000, the Tibbie Stakes can serve as a nice early lead-up to similar class and conditioned races of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

The Tibbie Stakes forms a major part of the annual two day Newcastle Racing Carnival. The Tibbie Stakes falls on the second day of the carnival, Newcastle Cup Day, on which the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup is also held along with the Group 3 Cameron Handicap.

One of the major lead up races to the Tibbie Stakes is the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) held at Rosehill the week before. From the Tibbie Stakes, the Group 3 Angst Stakes (1600m) at Randwick over the mile in early October makes a nice target race.

Hope In Your Heart (2022) is the last mare to complete the Tibbie Stakes – Angst Stakes double.

The 2022 Tibbie Stakes winner Hope In Your Heart franked the form with a host of subsequent top-level runs including a Golden Eagle fourth and second in that year’s The Gong. She also returned in 2023 and ran fourth in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic, Group 1 Doncaster Mile, and placed second in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

In 2023 Banana Queen won the Tibbie before a next-up third in the Group 2 Golden Pendant.

The 2025 Tibbie Stakes ran on Friday September 19, 2025 as part of the Newcastle Gold Cup Day card and saw the David Pfieffer trained favourite Oh Diamond Lil ($3.10F) salute for the punters.

Taking on the favourite in the Tibbie Stakes and for value like the price on DARK GLITTER (2). Mike Van Gestel’s Spieth mare hasn’t won since back in February at Randwick when she beat home IT’S A KNOCKOUT who is favourite for this race on Friday. She has however raced very competitively in some top races since including her narrow Group 2 Millie Fox second to Firestorm at 40/1 in the autumn and Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic third at Scone in the winter. 2025 Tibbie Stakes Field

The official Tibbie Stakes field and barrier draw is released on the Wednesday of race week and attracts a class line-up of in-form fillies and mares coming out of earlier Sydney Spring Racing Carnival events including the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) or the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) at Wyong a fortnight earlier.

Banana Queen (4th in 2023) was a recent Mona Lisa Stakes graduate to back-up and win the Tibbie Stakes. The Mona Lisa form was firmly franked that year in the Tibbie with the winner Mirra View running third in the Group 3, while Sanstoc ran second in both races.

Terra Mater (2024) was the last mare to complete the Mona Lisa Stakes – Tibbie Stakes double.

The 2025 Tibbie Stakes final field features a capacity line-up including Dark Glitter coming off a second in the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes and the in-form Oh Diamond Lil chasing a hat-trick.

Tibbie Stakes History

The Tibbie Stakes was inaugurated in 1990 and quickly became an important target for fillies and mares across New South Wales. Originally named the Tibbie Plate, the race received an upgraded name when its status was lifted to Listed in 2005. In 2013 the Tibbie Stakes was upgraded again to Group 3. Along with a prize increase this meant the Tibbie Stakes would now be a prime target for Sydney-stabled horses.

Notable Tibbie Stakes winners include More Strawberries (2011), She’s Clean (2015), Sweet Deal (2019), and Hope In Your Heart (2022).
