The Todman Stakes, also known as the Todman Slipper Trial, is an exciting Group 2 race held as part of the coveted Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. Taking place on Randwick Guineas Day in early – mid March at Royal Randwick Racecourse, the Todman Stakes is a traditional lead-up to the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Randwick Guineas Day is host to two Group 1 races – the $1 million Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) and the Group 1 $750,000 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) – as well as a number of other Group status support acts. Along with the Todman Stakes, the meeting is host to the fillies’ equivalent – the Group 2 $300,000 Reisling Stakes (1200m) – as well as the lucrative Group 2 $500,000 Challenge Stakes (1000m).
Worth $300,000 in prize money, the Todman Stakes is run over the sprint distance of 1200m and is for two-year-old colts and geldings at set weights. The Todman Stakes winner is exempt from Golden Slipper ballot and recent horses to complete the double include Farnan (2020), Vancouver (2015), and Pierro (2012).
Leading up to the Todman Stakes two-year-olds may run in the previous weekend’s Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) on Chipping Norton Stakes Day, and before the Golden Slipper the following week’s Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill is a nice lead-up for Todman Stakes graduates.
Anamoe won the 2021 Todman Stakes before a next-up Golden Slipper second and subsequent Group 1 Inglis Sires’ victory. He also took out the spring’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) over the mile before a controversial second when narrowly denied victory in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).
The 2023 Todman Stakes form was franked with the winner Cylinder running a next-up second in the Golden Slipper results. He also finished third in the spring’s Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m). Militarize meanwhile was third in the 2023 Todman and went on to salute in the Group 1 Inglis Sires’ (1400m) and Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) that prep before his Golden Rose Stakes victory.
Cylinder returned the next year in 2024 racing on the same day but down in Melbourne and scored an emotional upset victory for jockey Jamie Kah in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington to further frank the 2023 Todman form.
The 2024 Todman Stakes form was franked with the winner Switzerland returning in the spring to win Flemington’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The 2025 Todman Stakes winner Tentyris went on to win that year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes before a first-up win in the autumn of 2026 against the older horses in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning. Wodeton meanwhile ran second in the Todman, Golden Slipper and Golden Rose that year. Nepotism further franked the 2025 Todman form taking out the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the Randwick mile that April.
The Todman Stakes 2026 ran on Saturday March 7, 2026 at Randwick Racecourse as a key Golden Slipper Stakes lead-up and was won in an authoritative all-the-way effort by the Bjorn Baker-trained favourite Paradoxium ($2.60F).Â

STREATAN RULER (4) heads into the Todman Stakes brimming with confidence after his dominant Silver Slipper victory, putting a 3.47 length gap on them in a performance that screamed next level. It was his first Sydney run and he handled the rise in class and new surroundings with complete professionalism. His Melbourne form was already strong — a narrow second in the Listed Merson Cooper on debut behind Eviction Notice, who he then turned the tables on in the Silver Slipper, followed by a solid Blue Diamond Prelude fourth first-up. He’s trending sharply in the right direction, draws perfectly in gate four, and retains Chad Schofield, who clearly gets on well with him. Having comfortably beaten many of these last start, he looks a major player again and has every chance to go back-to-back.

Todman Stakes History
The Todman Slipper Trial was inaugurated in 1973 with Imagele claiming victory in the first race. It began as a principal race run over 1200m, and although the distance has remained the same, the status of the event has increased. It was elevated to a Group 3 status in 1980 before finally being installed as a Group 2 race in 1986. The race has taken place at a number of Sydney’s racecourses over the years including Rosehill Gardens, Canterbury Park and its current home at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
After 2005 the Todman Slipper Trial was called the Todman Stakes.
Notable Todman Stakes winners in recent years include Written Tycoon (2005), Smart Missile (2011) Pierro (2012), Criterion (2013), subsequent The Everest champion Yes Yes Yes (2019), champion Godolphin galloper Anamoe (2021), Switzerland (2024) and Tentyris (2025).
In 2020 Gai Waterhouse celebrated her incredible eighth Todman Stakes win with Farnan with the horse going on to also salute in that year’s Golden Slipper Stakes results.
