The Group 2 Caulfield Sprint is held at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse on the same day as the $5 million Caulfield Cup. The 1000m open handicap offers $300,000 in prize money and is regarded as having the most competitive field of sprinters in all 1000m to 1200m races in the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Caulfield Cup Day also features a host of other Group status races including the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) for the fillies, Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) and Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) making for a top day of spring racing and punting.

Horses may come into the Caulfield Sprint field via a lead-up run in a race like the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) at Flemington earlier in the month or Sydney’s Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m).

The best sprinters out of the Caulfield Sprint field will continue onto a Group 1 spring showdown including in 2011 when Sepoy won the Coolmore Stud Stakes next-up on Victoria Derby Day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The 2021 Caulfield Sprint form was franked with the winner Oxley Road returning the following autumn to run third in the 2022 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m).

In 2022 the Caulfield Sprint winner Asfoora won a Group 3 at Flemington next start before returning in the autumn of 2023 to finish third in that year’s Oakleigh Plate trifecta, fourth in the Group 1 The Galaxy results in Sydney and then run fourth in the inaugural $4 million The Quokka race in WA.

The 2023 Caulfield Sprint ran on Caulfield Cup Day on Saturday October 21, 2023 as The McCafe Sprint and was won in a late-lunging effort by the progressive Annabel Neasham-trained Doull ($13).

2023 Caulfield Sprint Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Caulfield Sprint 2023 Tips on the Caulfield Cup Day showdown this spring.

  • To Win: #4 General Beau ($8 at time of publish) – BET NOW

Small field lacking a bit of class, but have landed on General Beau first-up with plenty of decent form lines from last prep for him to frank here. The Brazen Beau entire for Matthew Ellerton has a good record fresh (6:2-1-0) and plenty of form at the Caulfield track (12:3-2-1). This is a horse that hasn’t won in a long time with his last being back in September of 2021. He has been competitive in plenty since however, is a Group 1 place-getter, and his latest run in August’s Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap for fourth was good. Down in the weights with 53kg to kick off his spring, which is the lightest he’s carried for some time. Barrier one and Damian Lane are two other pluses. Horses have broken longer winning droughts, and think it might be his time here.

Caulfield Sprint History

First raced in 1983 and won by Bow Mistress, the Caulfield Sprint has undergone plenty of name changes since it was first recognized as the Racing Museum Sprint. Over the years the race has been known as the Brylcream Sprint, National Sprint Championship, Caulfield Sprint, Jupiter’s Casino Sprint, Conrad Jupiter’s Sprint, Schillaci Stakes, Mercedes-Benz Sprint, National Telecoms Group Sprint, Dodo Internet Sprint and now it is known as the Thai Airways International Sprint.

First recognised as a Listed race, the Caulfield Sprint then became a Group 3 event in 1993 and finally advanced to Group 2 status in 1999. The race has only had one double winner which was Toledo in 1997-98 and was won with the fastest recorded time by Jet Spur in 2005 with 1 minute 2.1 seconds. The slowest winning time was recorded by 1992 winner Tanjian Prince with 1 minute 6.2 seconds.

The Caulfield Sprint was contested over 1000m for 2015 giving to a quicker winning time (57.45 seconds) and was a dead heat for first for the second time in as many years.
