The Q22 is a new $1.2 million Group 2 feature race at Eagle Farm on Stradbroke Handicap Day that has replaced the now defunct PJ O'Shea Stakes.
$1.2 million Group 2 The Q22 (2200m) is a new feature race held on Stradbroke Handicap Day during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
It replaces the now defunct Eagle Farm Cup / PJ O’Shea Stakes. For the history of that race please click here.
The first official running of the revamped The Q22 race took place in 2021 and was won by odds-on favourite Zaaki. Zaaki went on to frank the form out of the inaugural The Q22 winning the Underwood Stakes – Mackinnon Stakes double that spring, and the $5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m) the following autumn in 2022.
In 2022 trainer Annabel Neasham enjoyed back-to-back The Q22 wins with Numerian scoring an upset at 20/1.
The Q22 is a 2200m staying race taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse in mid June on Straddie Day. The meeting is host to two elite level races with The Q22 the key support act to the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) and the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m).
Worth a lucrative $1.2 million in prize money, The Q22 is contested at weight-for-age and is part of the reinvented Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.
Previously the Group 1 Queensland Derby was also run on Stradbroke Handicap Day, but that 2400m feature now runs a fortnight earlier allowing the three-year-old stayers out of the Derby to also target the The Q22.
The Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) is the key lead-up into The Q22 field and Zaaki (2021) is the last horse to do the double.
The 2023 The Q22 ran on Saturday June 10th, 2023 as part of the Stradbroke Handicap Day line-up at Eagle Farm and saw the Anthony & Sam Freedman-trained Without A Fight ($2.80F) post his second impressive win in Brisbane at just his third Australian start.

Zaaki ($1.26F in 2021) and Without A Fight ($2.80 in 2023) are the latest The Q22 favourites to salute for the punters.
There was a notable upset in 2022 with Numerian winning at $21.
Stay tuned for our insider The Q22 2023 Tips for the $1.2 million showdown at Eagle Farm this winter.
More than happy to take the $5 on offer for the in-form Huetor who is peaking at the right time for another million-dollar race victory. The consistent Team Snowden-trained import was last seen successfully defending his Doomben Cup title. He won that race last year before an eighth to Numerian in this event with excuses. He is back up in distance now for the first time since, but does have previous winning form up to 2400m. The reigning The Q22 champ Numerian was right on his heels in the Doomben Cup and presents as the danger again here so expecting a nail-biter. Staying on Huetor to atone for last year.
The Q22 field attracts a number of winter stayers coming off a lead-up in a race like the Doomben Cup or Queensland Derby looking to finish their campaign with a big $1.2 million feature win.
The official 2023 The Q22 field will be released on Wednesday the 7th of June, 2023 and will be published in full below.
The Q22 2023 final field features a class field of winter runners including two-time Doomben Cup hero Huetor, the reining champ Numerian, and narrow favourite Without a Fight coming off a big Lord Mayor’s Cup win at the track for Anthony & Sam Freedman.
