The Arrowfield 3YO Sprint – formerly known as the Royal Sovereign Stakes – is a Group 2 sprint race for three-year-old short-distance specialists. Currently held at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse, having previously had a stint at Warwick Farm Racecourse, in April each year the 1200m race is run under set weights conditions.

The wins kept coming for Ciaron Maher’s outstanding filly Tempted ($1.60F) who made it three on the trot with an all-too-easy victory over her fellow 3YOs in the 2026 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint results. Adding to her excellent Randwick strike-rate, last year’s The Everest runner-up put her hand up for a second shot at the world’s richest handicap when coming off a Group 1 Surround Stakes victory to beat home last year’s Blue Diamond winner Devil Night by over a length on Day 2 of The Championships off a lovely off-pace ride by Chad Schofield.

Worth $1 million in prize money the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint is a key feature for this age of runners each Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
The race takes place on the second Saturday of April on Day 2 of Sydney’s ‘The Championships. The meeting is headlined by four Group 1 races: the $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Australian Oaks, the Queen Of The Turf Stakes, and the coveted Sydney Cup run over the same two-mile distance as the Melbourne Cup.
The 2022 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint form was franked with the winner Mazu going on to take out the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 in Brisbane that winter before returning in the spring to run third in the The Everest results and finish second in the $3 million Winners Stakes.
The Arrowfield Sprint third placegetter from 2022, In The Congo, further franked the form with seconds in the Doomben 10,000 and Kingsford-Smith Cup that winter and a victory in Perth’s Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) later in the year.
The 2023 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint form was franked with the third placed filly Lady Laguna going on to perform strongly in a host of subsequent events including her $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares win at the Gold Coast in January of 2024.
In 2026, Ciaron Maher’s star filly Tempted completed the Group 1 Surround Stakes / Arrowfield 3YO Sprint double.

TEMPTED (8) is a short-priced favourite for good reason, and she looks perfectly placed to complete an autumn hat-trick when she lines up in a deep edition of the Arrowfield. The Ciaron Maher-trained Street Boss filly has been a model of consistency across her 11-start career and finally broke through at Group 1 level last start in the Surround Stakes, edging out Savvy Hallie second-up over 1400m in a performance that screamed “more to come”. We already know she can mix it with the world’s best sprinters after flashing home for second behind Ka Ying Rising in last year’s The Everest, and that form has only aged better since. Her Randwick record is outstanding (5:4-1-0), she thrives at 1200m, and she returns to the same course and distance she dominated in last year’s Percy Sykes. A sharp Rosehill trial win in the wet last month has her spot-on, and with Chad Schofield — unbeaten aboard her — sticking, she gets ideal conditions to extend the picket fence. She’ll take plenty of beating.

The official Arrowfield 3YO Sprint 2026 First Acceptances close on a Tuesday in mid-March along with all the other first acceptances for The Championships races and will be available below once announced by Racing NSW.
2026 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint Nominations
The official 2026 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint nominations – formerly the Royal Sovereign Stakes nominations – will be published below as soon as released in early February around two months out from the race date and will be followed by the first acceptances in early March.
The Arrowfield 3YO Sprint 2026 nominations attracted 135 three-year-olds led in all-in betting at time of publish by Ciaron Maher’s brilliant sprint filly, Tempted, who recently won the Group 1 Surround Stakes.
Royal Sovereign Stakes / Arrowfield Sprint History
First won by Acamar in 1979, the Royal Sovereign Stakes quickly changed to Group 3 status in 1981. In 1996 the Royal Sovereign Stakes was elevated to be a Group 2 event.
Since its inauguration in 1979, the fastest winning time for the Royal Sovereign Stakes was recorded by Guineas in 1998 with 1 minute 3.66 seconds. The slowest winning time was recorded in 1981 by Trench Digger with 1 minute 15.8 seconds.
The race has been run at Royal Randwick, Warwick Farm Racecourse and for one year it took place at Rosehill Gardens (2013) when Rebel Dane won. Up until 2006 the event was restricted to colts and geldings, but fillies are now also eligible to line-up in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint field. It was known as the Royal Sovereign Stakes from 1979 – 2013 before changing names to the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint in 2014.
The form of the 2021 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint was franked with the winner Wild Ruler going on to win that spring’s Group 1 Moir Stakes in Melbourne.
In 2022 the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint field ran with just four horses after seven were scratched due to the Heavy (10) Randwick track.
Tempted (2026) was the last Arrowfield 3YO Sprint winning filly.
