The Concorde Stakes is a Group 2 sprint, upgraded ahead of the 2026 edition, held at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney now worth a lucrative $1 million in stakes. Raced over a short distance of 1000 metres the Concorde Stakes is an exciting sprint that really tests the abilities of some of the more talented horses on the Sydney circuit.

Open to horses of both sexes aged three years and older the Concorde Stakes is run under set weights with penalties.

It is held on Chelmsford Stakes Day and shares the race card with three other Group races: the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), Furious Stakes (1200m) and the Tramway Stakes (1400m).

Those horse who perform particularly well in the Concorde Stakes might go on to target the Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) back at the track a fortnight later. The Concorde Stakes is now also a gun lead-up to the world’s richest turf race – the $20 million The Everest (1200m) held back at the track in October.

I Am Me (2024) was the last runner to complete the Concorde Stakes – The Shorts double.

Redzel won back-to-back editions of the Concorde Stakes in 2017 and 2018 ahead of his two historical wins in The Everest.

In 2018 Redzel made history as the first three-time Concorde Stakes winner.

The 2020 Concorde Stakes winner Gytrash backed-up to run third in that year’s The Everest trifecta before winning Rosehill’s Winners Stakes.

In 2021 the Concorde Stakes was won by Nature Strip at his third attempt. Nature Strip continued on to become the latest horse to complete the Concorde Stakes – The Everest double that spring.

Nature Strip further franked the form winning that year’s Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic at Flemington and returning the following autumn to win his third TJ Smith Stakes in 2022 ahead of a Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes win by 4.5 lengths at Royal Ascot in the UK.

The form out of the 2023 Concorde Stakes was franked with the third placed mare, Bella Nipotina, going on to win that year’s $3 million Winners Stakes (now Russell Balding Stakes) as well as the 2024 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 – Tatt’s Tiara double in Brisbane.

Bella Nipotina returned as favourite in the 2024 Concorde Stakes only to go down a neck to her stablemate, fellow Ciaron Maher-trained mare I Am Me.

Bella Nipotina went on to improve on her Concorde Stakes second to win the 2024 The Everest race when it took place as a Group 1 event for the first time. She further franked the form with success in the $3 million Winners Stakes and finishing third in Melbourne’s Gorup 1 Champions Sprint over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

2026 Concorde Stakes Form Guide

The Concorde Stakes form guide gives punters a detailed snapshot of every runner lining up in Sydney’s early spring 1000m dash. It breaks down each horse’s recent performances, first-up record, trial form, racing pattern and suitability to Randwick’s short-course pressure. Because the Concorde Stakes regularly features returning Group 1 sprinters, Everest hopefuls and sharp fresh horses, the form guide becomes one of the most important early-season tools for punters assessing Concorde Stakes odds, tips, and betting plays.

What the Concorde Stakes Form Guide Shows:

  • Short-course speed — The Concorde is a pure 1000m dash; punters can quickly identify which runners possess genuine early speed and sustained sprinting ability.
  • First-up performance — Many Concorde winners strike fresh; the form guide highlights horses with strong first-up records or proven early spring success.
  • Trial and jump-out form — August trials are crucial; sharp trial performers often bring winning momentum into the Concorde Stakes.
  • Randwick suitability — Horses who handle Randwick’s rise to the line and can maintain a strong sprint are well suited to the 1000m trip.
  • Race map — The form guide shows likely leaders, on-pace runners and swoopers, helping punters understand how the race may unfold.

What Punters Should Look for on the Concorde Stakes Form Guide:

  • Class edge — Group 1 sprinters resuming often outclass rivals over 1000m.
  • Trial sharpness — Horses showing intent in recent trials typically perform strongly first-up.
  • Speed vs pressure — Identify runners who can absorb early pressure and still finish off.
  • Stable plans for the spring carnival — Leading Sydney stables often target the Concorde as a key launchpad into The Shorts and The Everest.
  • Track pattern — Randwick can favour on-pace runners depending on wind and rail position, making race map analysis essential.

Concorde Stakes History

The Concorde Stakes became a listed race in 1990 following one year as an unlisted event. Alpine Flyer won the inaugural edition in 1989.

Registered as the Concorde Stakes the race has never really been known by any other sponsor name.

In 1997 the Concorde Stakes was upgraded to Group 3 before elevating to a Group 2 in 2026. Initially held at Rosehill Racecourse the Concorde Stakes shifted to Warwick Farm for the 2011 and 2012 editions. Since 2013 it has been held at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Initially raced over 1100m in 2013 the Concorde Stakes began to be held over 1000m.

Notable Concorde Stakes winners include Guineas (1999), Armidale (1997), and Joanne (1991).

Redzel made history with his back-to-back wins taking out the Concorde Stakes – The Everest double in 2017 and 2018 before winning the Concorde for a third time in 2019.

In 2021 Chris Waller’s brilliant sprinter Nature Strip, subsequent 2021 The Everest winner and 2022 King’s Stand Stakes champion in the UK, saluted as the odds-on favourite in his third attempt in the event.
