For 2020 the Champagne Classic offered $175,000 in prize money and took place on the same day as the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm with the carnival reduced and most Group 1 races including the Doomben 10,000 card cut from the program due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Champagne Classic is regarded as the best lead-up race to the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) held two weeks later and juveniles may then progress onto a mile for the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day in June.

In 2021 the race was run as the Spirit Of Boom classic in honour of the 2014 Doomben 10,000 champion Spirit Of Boom and was aptly won by Spirit Of Boom gelding Prince Of Boom.

The 2022 Spirit Of Boom Classic form was franked with the third placegetter Political Debate going on to run second in that year’s JJ Atkins results.

The 2024 Spirit Of Boom Classic winner Bittercreek went on to frank the form with a second in that year’s J.J. Atkins quinella.

In 2025, Cool Archie completed the Spirit Of Boom Classic / BRC Sires’ / JJ Atkins treble.

The 2026 Spirit Of Boom Classic runs on Saturday May 16, 2026 as part of the Doomben 10,000 Day card in Brisbane.

Stay tuned for our insider Spirit Of Boom Classic 2026 Tips on the Doomben 10,000 Day support act this winter carnival.

To Win: No. 9 Dream Roca

DREAM ROCA (1) is a classy and progressive El Roca filly trained out of the Sunshine Coast by Liam Birchley who lands herself a winnable race second-up in Brisbane on 10,000 Day. She looks ready to take a sharp second-up step after an eye-catching return in the Listed Dalrello over 1000m. She was only warming up late at Eagle Farm when charging into third on the wet track, and that run should bring her right to the boil for the rise to 1200m — the same trip she conquered in the Karaka Millions earlier in the year across the Tasman. She’s unbeaten second-up, draws the inside to land the perfect midfield trail, and her turn of foot at this distance is already proven against strong company. With natural improvement and a map that gives her every chance, she profiles as the two-year-old most likely to put them away late.

2026 Spirit Of Boom Classic Field

The Spirit Of Boom Classic race field attracts the best two-year-old winter gallopers that may have had an earlier Brisbane run in a race like the Listed Dalrello Stakes in late April at Eagle Farm and who are targeting a run in the following month’s JJ Atkins field.

In 2022 the Dalrello Stakes winning filly Exo Lady ran second as the beaten favourite behind Swiss Exile in the Spirit Of Boom Classic results.

The upset 2023 Spirit Of Boom Classic winner Cifrado came off a lead-up third in the Dalrello Stakes, while that year’s Dalrello Stakes winning filly Appin Girl finished third as the beaten favourite in the Spirit Of Boom Classic results.

Cool Archie (2025) was the last two-year-old to complete the Dalrello Stakes / Spirit Of Boom Classic double.

Another key lead-up into the Spirit Of Boom Classic field is the Group 3 Ken Russell Memorial Classic and Sizzling (2012) and Pressday (2010) won both races as well as the Group 1 JJ Atkins taking out the winter 2YO triple crown in Queensland. In 2020 Rothfire backed up from a Champagne Classic win for the punters to take out the Group 1 JJ Atkins next start.

The official Spirit Of Boom Classic 2026 field & barriers are set for release on the Wednesday before race day and will be published in full below.

The 2026 Spirit Of Boom Classic final field features a quality line-up of hopeful two-year-olds including Jenny Graham’s undefeated NSW visitor, Vantorix, to be ridden by the master James McDonald.

Champagne Classic / Spirit Of Boom Classic History

The Champagne Classic was first run in 1982 and won by Peand. The race record of 1:09.36 was set by Gold Edition in 2006 and after starting out as a Listed event, gained its Group 2 status for the first time in the same year.

Plenty of top-class juveniles have won the event over the years including Daybreak Lover (1983), Chief De Beers (1994), Court (2008), Sizzling (2012), Brazen Beau (2014), and Rothfire (2020).

The Champagne Classic race name was changed to the Spirit Of Boom Classic in 2021 in honour of form top-line Brisbane sprint star and the 2014 Doomben 10,000 winner Spirit Of Boom.

In 2022 the race took place at Eagle Farm Racecourse due to heavy rainfall making for unsuitable conditions at Doomben.
