The Lee Steere Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age sprint held at Ascot Racecourse in Perth during November's Summer Racing Carnival.
Held at Ascot Racecourse during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival, the Lee Steere Stakes is a 1400m weight-for-age race worth $250,000 in prize money. Held during early November on the same Saturday that Flemington hosts Mackinnon Stakes Day to round out the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the Group 2 race serves as a nice early lead-up for gallopers heading towards the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) a fortnight later and the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) in early December.
The Lee Steere Stakes – Railway Stakes double was last completed by Belle Bizarre (2006), while in 2017 the Lee Steere runner-up Great Shot went on to score an upset Railway Stakes result next race. The following year in 2018 the Lee Steer Stakes winner Gatting finished a brave second in the Railway Stakes results. Gatting would also go on to score a massive upset in the follow year’s Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington as a 100/1 shot!
Lead up events to the Lee Steere Stakes are few and far between, mainly because it’s held so early in the Perth Summer Racing Carnival, but backing the top-tier horses in the field with previous Group 1 or 2 wins at the track is key to successful Lee Steere Stakes betting.
One race horses in the Lee Steere Stakes field could come via in mid-October is the Group 3 Northerly Stakes (1400m) and the double was most recently completed by Silverstream in 2017.
The 2019 Lee Steere Stakes took place at Ascot Racecourse on November 9, 2019 and was won by the summer’s Perth Cup champ Star Exhibit.
