The Silver Slipper Stakes is a lucrative Group 2 race run in mid-late February during the prestigious Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. Held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, the Silver Slipper Stakes is one of three Group races at the meeting along with the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m).

He has subsequently firmed from $51 to $8 in all-in Golden Slipper betting at Ladbrokes.com.au and will next run in the Todman Stakes on March 7.

A 1100m sprint race for two-year-olds at set weights, the Silver Slipper Stakes offers $300,000 in prize money and is the first notable Group status race solely for two-year-olds at the carnival.
Runners from the Silver Slipper Stakes are traditionally eyeing a run in the richest race in the world for their age group – the Group 1 $5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) back at Rosehill in March. She Will Reign (2017) followed by Farnan (2020) are the latest two-year-olds to complete the Silver Slipper – Golden Slipper Stakes double.
Before the Golden Slipper Stakes the horses out of the Silver Slipper Stakes field may run in a lead-up race like Canberra’s Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m), or either the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) for fillies or Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) for colts & geldings the week before.
The Silver Slipper Stakes form in 2021 was franked with the winner Home Affairs going on to win that spring’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne.
The 2021 Silver Slipper Stakes winner Home Affairs raced on the same day 12 months later in Melbourne to deny his stablemate Nature Strip victory first-up in Flemington’s Group 1 $1 million Black Caviar Lightning (1000m).
The 2022 Silver Slipper Stakes form was franked with the winner Best Of Bordeaux running a next-up second in the Golden Slipper Stakes results. He also finished third that spring in Melbourne’s Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.
The 2023 Silver Slipper winner Cylinder went on to take out the Group 2 Todman Stakes at his next start before a second in that year’s Golden Slipper results. He also returned for a strong spring campaign that included a Group 2 Run To The Rose victory, third in the Group 1 Golden Rose and fifth in the world’s richest turf race – the $20 million The Everest. King’s Gambit meanwhile ran third in both the Silver Slipper and Golden Slipper that year.
In 2025 the upset Silver Slipper winner, Beiwacht, went on to frank the form that spring winning the Group 1 Golden Rose in September while the third-placed Wodeton would go on to place second in the Golden Slipper and Golden Rose that season.
The Silver Slipper Stakes 2026 ran on Saturday February 21, 2026 at Rosehill Gardens as a key Golden Slipper lead-up and was won in a huge 3.47 length romp home by the Phillip Stokes-trained Melbourne raider Stretan Ruler ($5.50).Â

The Silver Slipper shapes as an open and intriguing clash of Golden Slipper hopefuls, but HIDRIX (6) is the one I want to be with to go back-to-back. The Chris Waller-trained Extreme Choice colt made a sharp impression on debut here at Rosehill on January 31, putting 1.69 lengths on Confederation to score comfortably in the G3 Canonbury Stakes over 1100m. He went around at double figure odds that day, and while the market has tightened right up for this assignment, he still appeals at the price. Zac Lloyd sticks from a midfield draw that gives him options, and although the inside alley played a big part in his first-up success, there’s enough class and late strength about him to handle a trickier map against stronger opposition. If he takes the natural step forward, he’s right in the finish again.

Silver Slipper Stakes History
Eskimo Prince was the inaugural Silver Slipper Stakes winner when the race was first held in 1963. It began as a Principal race run over four furlongs and was run over five furlongs for one year in 1970. With Australia’s adoption of the metric system in 1973, the race distance was converted to 900m.
In 1979 the Silver Slipper reached its current Group 2 status and then the race distance was increased to 1100m in 1984. Due to an outbreak of the equine influenza in Australia, the race was not held in 1997.
A host of gun two-year-olds have dominated the Silver Slipper Stakes results over the years including recent Golden Slipper champions Pierro (2012), Mossfun (2014), and She Will Reign (2017).
