2026 Wakeful Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Wakeful Stakes 2026 Tips on the Derby Day support act this spring.

The Wakeful Stakes is a Group 2 race for three-year-old fillies contested at Flemington Racecourse.

Held the Saturday before the illustrious Melbourne Cup in late October or early November annually, the Wakeful Stakes is one of nine Group status races that fill the card on Victoria Derby Day. VRC Derby Day is one of the only race meets in Australia where every race has Group status. There are three Group 1 races on the card: the Victoria Derby (2500m), Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), and Empire Rose Stakes (1600m).

The Wakeful Stakes is a 2000m event serving as an excellent lead-up race to the highly prestigious Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) for three-year-old fillies the following Thursday.

The Wakeful Stakes results have been a good indication for the VRC Oaks over the years, with 16 fillies taking out the double since 1983, including most recently Kirramosa (2013), Aristia (2018), Miami Bound (2019), Willowy (2021) and Treasurethe Moment (2024).

In 2020 Personal improved on her lead-up second as the beaten favourite in the Wakeful Stakes to win the Kennedy Oaks.

The 2022 Wakeful Stakes winner Zennzella went on to finish fourth in the Kennedy Oaks results at her next start, while Pavitra ran second in both events that year.

The 2023 Wakeful Stakes also produced that year’s VRC Oaks winner with Zardozi improving on her lead-up second in the Group 2 to take out the 2500m feature.

The 2024 Wakeful Stakes winner Treasurethe Moment not only won that year’s VRC Oaks, but she returned in the autumn win four straight races including the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes and Group 1 Australian Oaks. She further franked the form with a first-up Group 1 Memsie Stakes win in the spring of 2025.

Strictly Business (2nd in 2025) was the last VRC Oaks winner to come via the Wakeful.

2026 Wakeful Stakes Form Guide

The Wakeful Stakes form guide is one of the most valuable tools for punters assessing Australia’s premier staying race for three-year-old fillies. Run over 2000 metres at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day, the Group 2 feature is a proven lead-up to the VRC Oaks and regularly attracts the season’s leading fillies with classic aspirations. The form guide provides crucial information on each runner’s recent performances, distance credentials, breeding, barrier draw, jockey and trainer combinations, and betting market movements. By analysing the Wakeful Stakes form guide, punters can identify the fillies most likely to relish the staying test and emerge as genuine contenders for both the race and the following week’s Oaks.

What Punters Should Look for in the Wakeful Stakes Form Guide:

  • 2000m and staying form – Fillies that have performed strongly over 1800m and beyond often have the best credentials for the Wakeful Stakes.
  • VRC Oaks lead-up races – Horses coming through races such as the Thousand Guineas, Ethereal Stakes, Moonee Valley Vase, Spring Champion Stakes, and other fillies’ staying features often bring the strongest form lines.
  • Set weights plus penalties profile – Assess whether any fillies are carrying penalty weight for previous black-type success and how that impacts the field.
  • Pedigree and breeding – As many runners are still developing, staying bloodlines can be an important indicator of which fillies will appreciate the rise in distance.
  • Flemington suitability – The spacious Flemington circuit and long straight often favour fillies capable of building momentum and sustaining a strong finishing effort.
  • Current spring form – Progressive fillies peaking during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival are frequently among the leading contenders.
  • Group race performances – Proven form in Group and Listed company is often a strong measure of class and competitiveness.
  • Closing sectionals – Fillies producing strong late splits over middle distances can be particularly suited to the Wakeful Stakes.
  • Barrier draw – A favourable gate can help runners settle comfortably and avoid covering unnecessary ground over the 2000m trip.
  • Trainer and jockey combinations – Leading stables often target the Wakeful Stakes as a pathway to the VRC Oaks and regularly field strong chances.
  • Betting market support – Significant moves in the Wakeful Stakes betting markets can signal stable confidence in fillies expected to excel over the staying journey.

Wakeful Stakes History

The Wakeful Stakes was first run in 1932 when Protea won the inaugural race. It started as a principal event run over ten furlongs and remained the same until 1973 when the distance was converted into 2000m with Australia’s adoption of the metric system. In 1979 the Wakeful Stakes was elevated to Group 2 status.

Many fine fillies have contested the race and high-quality Wakeful Stakes winners include Miami Bound (2019), Aristia (2018), Zarita (2007), and Tuesday Joy (2006).

Treasurethe Moment (2024) is the most notably recent Wakeful Stakes winner as she went on to complete a rare VRC Oaks – ATC Oaks double that season.
