The Group 2 Sunline Stakes is named in honour of the champion mare Sunline, who was the world’s highest earning female horse of her time. In a total of 48 career starts, Sunline won 32 races in Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong making her total career earnings over $11 million.

Matt Laurie’s four-time Group 1 winning daughter of Alabama Express, Treasurethe Moment ($2.80F), relished a drop in grade off a lead-up third fresh in the Futurity Stakes to salute for the punters with a soft two-length victory in the 2026 Sunline Stakes results. The Caulfield specialist was given a peach of an on-pace ride by jockey Daniel Stackhouse to come from second on the turn for home before getting the gap at the 300m, gliding through, hitting the lead and extending late. She will next run in either the Doncaster Mile or Queen of the Turf Stakes both held over the Randwick mile during April’s ‘The Championships’.

Run over a 1600m distance, the weight-for-age race is held specifically for fillies and mares aged three years and over.

Worth $300,000 in prize money, the Sunline Stakes is held at the same meeting as the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) during the Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival at Moonee Valley Racecourse*. Good lead-up races to the Sunline Stakes field include the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes and the Frances Tressady Stakes, both 1400m races for mares are held at Flemington.

*The 2026 Sunline Stakes ran at Caulfield Racecourse with The Valley under redevelopment.

In 2021 the Sunline Stakes winner Quantum Mechanic went on to run third in that year’s Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) in Sydney.

The Sunline Stakes 2022 form was franked with the runner-up Barb Raider going on to also run second in the both Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) in Adelaide that April and the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) in Brisbane in June.

The 2026 Sunline Stakes was won by four-time Group 1 winning mare Treasurethe Moment who had earlier completed the VRC Oaks / ATC Oaks double as a filly the season before.

The Sunline Stakes 2026 ran on William Reid Stakes Day at Caulfield Racecourse (Moonee Valley closed for redevelopment) on Saturday March 21, 2026 and saw the Matt Laurie-trained favourite, Treasurethe Moment ($2.80F), relish a drop in grade to win by two lengths.

2026 Sunline Stakes Field

The Sunline Stakes field attracts a smart line-up of middle-distance fillies and mares each autumn coming out of similar class Melbourne races.

The best out of the Sunline Stakes field could then head up to Sydney for ‘The Championships’ races in autumn or return in the winter for the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide that the 2017 Sunline Stakes winner I Am A Star ran third in.

The official 2026 Sunline Stakes Field & Barrier Draw is released the Wednesday before William Reid Stakes Day and will be published in full below.

The Sunline Stakes 2026 final field features a dozen fillies and mares including the rails-drawn Matt Laurie-trained four-time Group 1 winner Treasurethe Moment racing second-up and Mark Walker’s class Kiwi expat Damask Rose coming off a second in the Group 3 Matron Stakes with improvement pending.

Sunline Stakes History

First held in 1981 and won by Epillette, the Sunline Stakes was originally named the Diamond Jubilee Stakes until 2000.

Held over a 1500m distance in 2005, the Group Two event was first introduced as a Listed race until 1990 when it was changed until 1994 as a Group Three event.

In 2026 the race took place at Caulfield with a major redevelopment to Moonee Valley seeing the track closed.
