Connections of the Ben, Will & JD Hayes-trained Storm Leopard ($4.20F) will consider paying the late entry fee for the gelding to back up into the Group 1 Australian Derby following his emphatic 1.81 length romp home for the punters in Saturday’s 2026 Tulloch Stakes results. Jockey Tommy Berry gave the eventual winner a perfectly timed ride sitting second behind the runaway leader Shangri La Boy approaching the turn before hitting top gear 300m out from the line, taking over in front and extending to salute by a big margin ahead of Eureka Rebel. Shangri La Boy held for third, while the original favourite Arcora ($2.40F) was pulled up halfway failing to finish.

The meeting is host to two Group 1 races – the $1.5 million Tancred Stakes (2400m) and the $750,000 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) – as well as a host of support acts including the Tulloch Stakes and the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) for the fillies & mares.

Offering $300,000 in total prize money the Tulloch Stakes serves as a key lead-up to the Group 1 $2 million Australian Derby (2400m) contested at Royal Randwick a week later on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’. Recent horses to complete the Tulloch Stakes – ATC Derby double include Starcraft (2004), Jon Snow (2017), Levendi (2018), Angel Of Truth (2019), and Quick Thinker (2020).

In 2021 Young Werther ran third in the Tulloch Stakes results before a second in the ATC Derby that autumn.

The 2023 Tulloch Stakes also produced that year’s Australian Derby winner with Major Beel running second in the Group 2 lead-up.

The form was further franked that year with the 2023 Tulloch third place-getter Awesome John heading over to Perth next race to win the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m).

Horses may come into the Tulloch Stakes field via a number of earlier autumn lead-up races including the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) run at the same track a fortnight earlier on Coolmore Classic Day.

The 2025 Tulloch Stakes form was franked with the runner-up, Firm Agreement, going on to run second in that autumn’s Australian Derby quinella, while the third placed King Of Thunder travelled to Brisbane in the winter and finished runner-up in the Queensland Derby results.

The Tulloch Stakes 2026 ran on Saturday March 28, 2026 at Rosehill Gardens as a key ATC Derby lead-up and was won in runaway fashion by the progressive Lindsay Park-trained Storm Leopard ($4.20F).

2026 Tulloch Stakes Field

The Group 2 Tulloch Stakes field features a maximum of 16 three-year-old colts and geldings plus up to four emergency horses and is released on the Wednesday before Tancred Stakes Day serving as a final lead-up to the Australian Derby.

The official 2026 Tulloch Stakes field will be released by Racing NSW on the Wednesday leading up to Tancred Stakes Day and published below once announced.

The Tulloch Stakes 2026 final field features a dozen potential Australian Derby hopefuls led in betting by last start Australian Cup Prelude winner Arcora drawn well in gate three and the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Pierro colt Shangri La Boy looking to return to his best third-up and fit.

Tulloch Stakes History

First run in 1973 when Longfella claimed victory, the Tulloch Stakes began as a Principal race run over 1850m. In 1979 the race distance was increased to 2000m, and the event was installed as a Group 2 race.

There have been a number of high-quality horses to take out the Tulloch Stakes including Ivory’s Irish (1995), Mahogany (1994) and Durbridge (1991), all of which won the Tulloch Stakes/Australian Derby double.

More recent notable Tulloch Stakes winners include next-up Australian Derby champions Quick Thinker (2020), Angel Of Truth (2019), Levendi (2018), and Jon Snow (2017); as well as Hauraki (2015), and Count Encosta (2010).

In 2022 the Tulloch Stakes was moved from Rosehill on Saturday the 26th of March to Newcastle on Monday the 28th of March due to unsafe Heavy track conditions and rainfall.
