Jockey James McDonald looks set to keep his record Group 1 tally rising when he partners the talented Chris Waller-trained mare Aeliana in the Tancred Stakes 2026 this Saturday in Sydney.

One of the key staying races of the season at Rosehill, this weekend’s Group 1 $1.5 million Tancred Stakes (2400m) features a diminutive but class line-up of just eight hopefuls following the early scratching of Wootton Verni.

Dominating the Tancred Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au, Chris Waller‘s in-form four-year-old daughter of Castelvecchio, Aeliana, is installed at a very conservative quote of $1.75 to make it back-to-back elite level wins on a quick seven-day back-up.

Last Saturday she returned to winning form third-up when narrowly saluting as the short favourite in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) after having earlier run second to her undefeated stablemate Autumn Glow in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes and Group 1 Verry Elleegant.

J-Mac retains the ride now as Aeliana looks to strike again while the iron is hot with the mare set to relish the rise in distance having won the Australian Derby around this time last autumn beating the boys by five lengths over the mile and half she sees on Saturday.

The Tancred Stakes field has an international flare again in 2026 with the defending champion Dubai Honour back down under chasing another win in the weight-for-age feature.

The ultra-consistent William Haggas-trained UK raider boasts an excellent record in Australia including beating Duke De Sessa home in this race 12 months ago.

He has been racing well over the last year, always shows up well fresh and has Tom Marquand in the saddle once more looking to become history’s third dual Tancred Stakes champ joining Octagonal (1996 & 1997) and Tie The Knot (1999 & 2000).

Vauban ($6) for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott is the other single-figure hopeful in the latest Tancred Stakes betting markets.

The eight-year-old son of Gailway resumed on March 14 here at Rosehill adding to his good strike rate at the track (3:2-0-1) when winning the Group 3 Sky High Stakes by a length.

Hartnell (2015) was the last horse to complete the Sky High / Tancred Stakes double Vauban chases this weekend, and the evergreen veteran will jump from gate three with Tim Clark retaining the ride on the potential value runner in the mix.

Waller has twice won the Tancred in recent years with Preferment (2016) and Verry Elleegant (2020) and, along with the shortie in the markets, he also saddles-up four other remaining runners with the next best in betting being Soul Of Spain ($13).

Tommy Berry sticks aboard the in-form son of Phoenix Of Spain who has been building up to a test like this running a huge fourth at triple figures in the Verry Elleegant before his last start second in the Sky High.

The 2026 Tancred Stakes is set to run as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEDT) on the 10-race Sydney card on Saturday.
