Chris Waller looks set for another huge race day in Sydney on Saturday saddling up the favourites in both Group 1 races on the card including his Kiwi raider Ohope Wins in the 2026 Vinery Stud Stakes.

As a warm-up to his Ranvet Stakes winning mare Aeliana racing on the quick back-up in the Tancred Stakes, Waller’s bonnie daughter of Ocean Park – Ohope Wins – dominates betting on the Group 1 $750,000 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) with the classy bay making her debut for the Waller stable down under.

She’s been the picture of consistency across the Tasman all campaign winning her past three on the trot including, most recently, a stellar effort to overcome gate 14 of 17 and put 2.2 lengths on the next best in the Group 1 NZ Oaks (2400m) at Ellerslie in late February.

Ohope Wins is out to hand trainer Chris Waller his fourth Vinery Stud Stakes trophy since 2018!

After a short freshen-up she now arrives in Australia fit, firing and down in distance out to salute for the punters as the $2.90 favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au.

While her mid-March Randwick trial was only fair, she boasts a class edge over plenty in this field.

Waller applies the blinkers to keep her focuses as she looks to bring her New Zealand brilliance to Oz, and the big tick is of course the booking of master hoop James McDonald who partners the favourite from gate nine with Ohope Wins set to lengthen late and steal the show.

Out to stop the Kiwi visitor occupying the second line of Vinery Stud Stakes betting at $3.70 for top trainer Ciaron Maher is Salty Pearl.

The grey Tagaloa filly is starting to put together a glowing CV now and re-entered the winners’ stall last time out in the VOBIS Platinum Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on March 14.

It was a soft 2.75 length win over Silvasista in that easier assignment, and she’s earned her shot at the Group 1 now as she heads north to Sydney for the first time.

Back in elite grade for the first time since her fourth to Ole Dancer at 25/1 in the Thousand Guineas last October, how Salty Pearl handles racing the other way will be key to her chances and she’ll be ridden from a good gate three draw by Ben Melham.

A further two potential Australian Oaks-bound fillies can also be found under double figures in the latest Vinery Stud Stakes odds with the Mark Walker-trained Belle Cheval ($4.20) and a stablemate to the favourite Panova ($6) drawn in barriers two and seven respectively.

Savabeel filly Belle Cheval also heads down under for the first time in the Vinery with the airborne Golden Slipper winning hoop Zac Lloyd booked for the ride.

She was narrowly denied in New Zealand’s richest race at her latest when beaten a nostril flare by the talented Well Written in The Kiwi (1500m) with Saturday her first 2000m test.

Panova is considered the other most likely to hand Waller his fourth win in the Vinery and first since Fangirl (2022).

Best known for her 1.75 length Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes win at HQ last Melbourne Cup Carnival; she has had two runs this prep without a top three finish but has shown plenty of potential.

The daughter of Trapeze Artist resumed in the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in late February running sixth to Tempted before a closer effort for fifth to Sixties when taking on the boys in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) here a fortnight ago.

Back against her own kind suits and she looks one who has been crying out for the distance.

The value in the Vinery and the early market mover backed in from $13 to $10 at time of publish meanwhile is Gary Portelli‘s rails-drawn Long Legs.

The well-bred Russian Revolution filly is being thrown in the deep end now having earned her spot in the Group 1 field via a last start fourth only a quarter-length off the winner Feminino in the Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m) on March 13 with improvement pending.

The 2026 Vinery Stud Stakes is set to run as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:25pm (AEDT).
