Conducted at the esteemed Royal Randwick Racecourse, it is one of the key support acts on the card headlined by the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) – now worth an incredible $2 million – for VRC Derby hopefuls.

Formerly named after the prolific New South Wales thoroughbred owner-breeder Stan Fox, the event had a notable re-vamp ahead of the 2022 edition to replace the now defunct $1 million Bondi Stakes race for three-year-olds.

Moved to late October and having its prize money doubled to $1 million, the Stan Fox Stakes was renamed the Callander-Presnell in honour of Sydney racing media figures Ken Callander and Max Presnell.

The event distance also increased from 1500m to 1600m and is run at set weights by three-year-olds.

Prior to 2022, it ran earlier as a lead-up to the now defunct Bondi Stakes that ran from 2019-21. During that time both Peltzer (2020) and Hilal (2021) completed the Stan Fox Stakes – Bondi Stakes double.

Notable past winners include Lonhro (2001), Kenwood Melody (1998), General Nediym (1997), Octagonal (1995) and Show County (1989).

The Stan Fox Stakes was previously held earlier in the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival and served as a good lead-up to majors including the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) and the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Along with the Spring Champion Stakes and Callander-Presnell, the other seven-figure event on the Randwick race card that day is the now Group 2 $2 million The Invitation (1400m) for fillies and mares.

The newly created $500,000 Tapp-Craig (1400m) event held a fortnight earlier offers a Callander-Presnell ballot exemption to the first, second and third placegetters.

Ohope (2025) was the last horse to complete the Tapp-Craig – Callander-Presnell double.

The 2022 Callander-Presnell winner Golden Mile travelled up for the event on the back of a lead-up win in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) over the mile in Melbourne.

The Callander-Presnell 2022 form was franked with the runner-up Communist returning the following autumn to win the 2023 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

The latest edition of the Callander-Presnell ran on Saturday October 25, 2025 at Royal Randwick offering $1 million and saw the favourite Ohope ($2.70F) come from midfield to unleash a powerful late finish to salute for the punters.

To Win: No. 4 Ruination

RUINATION (5) is on the second line of betting but shapes up as a genuine winning hope for mine in this lucrative event for 3YOs. Michael Freedman saddles-up a bunch of excellent horses in both Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday including this Wootton Bassett colt who comes in a two-time winner from three starts with plenty of upside pending. He was odds-on at Newcastle two back and saluted for the punters taking on both his own age and 4YO runners. At his latest he was second best behind Attica in the Listed Dulcify Quality at this track and trip. Showed plenty of determination to work across from a wide alley and stuck on gamely. Attica jumps one of the favourites in the Group 1 Spring Champion now and that bodes well for this guy sticking to the mile in easier grade. He’s got the proven ability to handle a pressure cooker affair, and I love that Tommy Berry has opted to ride him over Ohope who he guided to victory in the Tapp-Craig. Can win.

Stan Fox Stakes / Callander-Presnell Race History

The inaugural winner of the Stan Fox Stakes was Hydahban when the event was first held as a Principal race over 1200m in 1975.

The status and distance of the race remained the same up until 1981 when the length was increased to 1400m and then in 1985 it became a Listed race. Not long after in 1989 the event gained Group 3 status before finally being installed as a Group 2 event in 1996.

The race was not held in 2007 due to the outbreak of equine influenza in Australia at the time.

In 2022 the event was moved to late October, the distance increased from 1500m to 1600m, and prize money increased to $1 million to replace the Bondi Stakes as the premier Sydney race for three-year-olds over the spring with that year’s Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile saluting for the punters.
