  • 3rd: No. 9 By Choice

Winning Margin: 1.11 lengths

Winning Time: 1:09.71

Unit Five ($8) announced himself as a star of the future with a stunning victory in the 2026 Magic Millions 2YO Classic results at the Gold Coast, producing a powerful late surge under Tom Stockdale to claim the $3 million feature at just its second career start.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Supido colt settled off the speed before unleashing a sharp turn of foot, sweeping past Tornado Valley and By Choice to secure a historic win and deliver Maher his third success in the race.

The performance was all the more impressive given Unit Five’s inexperience, backing up a stylish Caulfield debut in the Victorian Magic Millions Classic to conquer one of Australia’s toughest juvenile tests, stamping himself as a major player heading toward the autumn and beyond.

The race is held on the highly anticipated Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day and is open only to horses previously purchased at the Magic Millions yearling sales. The meeting became the country’s first offering $10 million in prize money in 2016 and continues to grow in prestige and stakes.

As well as the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic the meeting features nine other events including the $3 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).

The Magic Millions Classic is also worth $3 million in prize money and is contested over 1200m by two-year-old Magic Millions graduates.

Horses in the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic field may have had a lead-up run the month before in Sydney’s Wyong Magic Millions Classic (1100m). Another good lead-up into the lucrative $3 million feature is the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) in Brisbane a fortnight earlier.

Coolangatta (2021 – 2022) followed by Storm Boy (2023 – 2024) are the last two-year-olds to complete the BJ McLachlan Stakes – Magic Millions 2YO Classic double.

The best out of the Magic Millions Classic go on to have successful autumn campaigns including a possible run in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens. Capitalist (2016) was the last horse to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic – Golden Slipper double as a juvenile.

The 2022 Magic Millions 2YO Classic form was franked with the winning filly Coolangatta continuing on to run third in that autumn’s Golden Slipper results. She also won the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at The Valley in the spring.

In 2024 co-trainer Gai Waterhouse celebrated her record fifth Magic Millions 2YO Classic win on the Gold Coast with race favourite Storm Boy saluting for the punters.

Storm Boy franked the Magic Millions Classic 2024 form with a third in that year’s Golden Slipper Stakes results.

The 2026 Magic Millions 2YO Classic ran at the Gold Coast on Saturday January 17, 2026 offering $3 million in total prize money and was won in a one length upset by the Ciaron Maher trained Unit Five ($8).

2026 Magic Millions 2YO Classic Tips

Stay tuned for our exclusive Magic Millions 2YO Classic 2026 Tips on the $3 million showdown for two-year-olds this summer.

Best Bet: No. 7 Shiki (Each Way)

SHIKI (10) shapes as a genuine Each Way player for mine in a race that’s more open than our odds-on elect would suggest.

This standout filly taking on the boys looks the pick of the Waterhouse/Bott team at around the $12 mark, and history is firmly on her side — fillies have dominated this race in recent times, winning seven editions between 2017 and 2025, and 11 of the past 16 overall.

She kicked off her career in style, narrowly taking out the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes at Randwick, and her form ties in neatly with leading contender Warwoven after finishing fourth to him fresh last month. She then arrived at the Gold Coast and immediately made an impression, returning to the winner’s stall in last weekend’s Aquis Gold Pearl for the fillies.

She now steps up to 1200m for the first time on the quick back-up, but with her race fitness, proven class, and the stable’s Magic Millions know-how, she looks a terrific value play to be right in the finish.

Magic Millions Classic History

The Magic Millions Classic was first run in 1987 when the Sally Rogers-trained Snippets claimed victory. From 1988 through until 1991, two races were run every year, one solely for fillies. Then in 1992 there was again two Magic Millions Classic races run, one over the standard 1200m and the other over 1400m. It was in this year that Clan O’Sullivan set a time record for the race of 1:08.46, the champion horse winning both runnings of the event for 1992. A similar thing happened the following year in 1991 when star filly Bold Promise claimed victory in both the fillies and the open Magic Millions Classic races.

A host of star two-year-olds have won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast over the years including subsequent Golden Slipper champion Capitalist (2016).

The fillies have a dominant record over the colts and geldings in recent Magic Millions Classic history including wins by Houtzen (2017), Sunlight (2018), Exhilarates (2019), Away Game (2020), that year’s odds-on favourite Coolangatta (2022), and O’Ole (2025) who completed the Wyong / Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic double.

The Gold Coast’s Magic Millions Day – including the 2023 Magic Millions 2YO Classic -was abandoned after the opening two races due to ongoing rainfall, deteriorating track conditions and unsafe jockey conditions and rescheduled for the following Thursday.

The 2024 Magic Millions Classic prize purse was increased to $3 million with Gai Waterhouse training her fifth winner in Storm Boy.

In 2025 the Magic Millions Classic ran on a Friday night under the lights after the original Saturday meeting the weekend prior was washed out.
