The Magic Millions 2YO Classic is the highlight event of the illustrious Gold Coast Magic Millions Racing Carnival that takes place at the Gold Coast Racecourse annually in January.

The race is held on the highly anticipated Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day and is open only to horses previously purchased at the Magic Millions yearling sales. The meeting became the country’s first offering $10 million in prize money in 2016 and continues to grow in prestige and stakes.

As well as the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic the meeting features eight other events including the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).

The Magic Millions Classic is also worth $2 million in prize money and is contested over 1200m by two-year-old Magic Millions graduates.

Horses in the Gold Coast’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic field may have had a lead-up run the month before in Sydney’s Wyong Magic Millions Classic (1100m). Another good lead-up into the $2 million feature is the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) in Brisbane a fortnight earlier.

The best out of the Magic Millions Classic go on to have successful autumn campaigns including a possible run in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens. Capitalist (2016) was the last horse to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic – Golden Slipper double as a juvenile.

The 2021 Magic Millions 2YO Classic ran on Saturday January 16, 2021 at the Gold Coast Racecourse and was won by the Chris Waller-trained Shaquero.

2021 Magic Millions 2YO Classic Nominations & Entries

The early Magic Millions 2YO Classic nominations close in October the year before the race takes place during the summer.

This is followed by the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic First Acceptances in early December, just over a month before Magic Millions Day. Late Magic Millions 2YO Classic entries are also taken on the same day as first declarations.

Magic Millions Classic History

The Magic Millions Classic was first run in 1987 when the Sally Rogers-trained Snippets claimed victory. From 1988 through until 1991, two races were run every year, one solely for fillies. Then in 1992 there was again two Magic Millions Classic races run, one over the standard 1200m and the other over 1400m. It was in this year that Clan O’Sullivan set the time record for the race of 1:08.46, the champion horse winning both runnings of the event for 1992. A similar thing happened the following year in 1991 when star filly Bold Promise claimed victory in both the fillies and the open Magic Millions Classic races.

A host of star two-year-olds have won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast over the years including subsequent Golden Slipper champion Capitalist (2016).

The fillies have a dominant record over the colts and geldings in recent Magic Millions Classic history including wins by Houtzen (2017), Sunlight (2018), Exhilarates (2019) and Away Game (2020).
