Named in honour of the former champion mare Emancipation, the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes is a set weights plus penalties race for fillies and mares held in late March during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

The price on Idle Flyer to win the Group 1 Queen of the Turf Stakes on April 11 has firmed from $13 into $7 through Ladbrokes.com.au following the impressive win by the Matthew Smith-trained mare in Saturday’s 2026 Emancipation Stakes results. Given a perfect ride by the flying Zac Lloyd, Idle Flyer surged through a gap inside the final furlong to run past her rivals and salute by three-quarters of a length in a terrific effort ahead of her elite level test over the Randwick mile next start.

Run over 1500m and offering $300,000 in prize money, the Emancipation Stakes moved to Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in 2014 and now takes place on Tancred Stakes Day.
The meeting is headlined by the Group 1 $1.5 million Tancred Stakes (2400m) and the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m). Along with the Emancipation Stakes, the other Group 2 support act on the card is the Tulloch Stakes (2000m) for ATC Derby types.
Runners in the Emancipation Stakes field may come via a run in a race like the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at the same track / distance a fortnight earlier.
After the Group 2 a nice option for the best out of the Emancipation Stakes is a Royal Randwick run during ‘The Championships’ in the Group 1 Queen Of the Turf Stakes (1600m) and Amanpour (2nd in 2015) was the last Emancipation Stakes graduate to go on and win that Group 1.
The Emancipation Stakes winner is exempt from ballot for the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.
The 2022 Emancipation Stakes form was franked with the winner Promise Of Success returning in the spring to win the $2 million The Invitation race.
In 2023 the Emancipation Stakes winner Roots went on to run second that winter in Brisbane’s Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).
The 2023 Emancipation Stakes also produced that year’s next-up Queen Of The Turf Stakes winner with runner-up Atishu going on to claim the Group 1. Atishu also won the Group 1 Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington that spring.

The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained Frosted mare is ideally rated at set weights plus penalties here and is one of the standout Rosehill performers in the field boasting a strong record at the track (7:2-3-1) that includes her Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes victory in the spring at 30/1. She’s been rock solid in her two lead-up runs this prep when third fresh only a length off Verona Rose in Randwick’s Group 2 Guy Walter in late February before a last start second narrowly denied by a very good mare in Lazzura in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m). Returns to the same track and trip down in grade facing an easier field of rivals now and is still at a remarkably generous price. Consistently underrated, has form around some very good types, her Group 1 run last time out was huge and she’s the value of the day for mine.

Emancipation Stakes History
First held in 1985, the Emancipation Stakes was first won by Aspirations when it was a Listed race. In 1996 it became a Group 3 event until 1999 when it was elevated to Group 2 status. R.S. Dye is the only jockey to have managed six wins in the event between years 1988 to 1999.
The race is named in honour of Emancipation. Emancipation was a mare who only raced as a three and four-year-old however her racing career was outstanding. She won 19 out of 28 starts and all seven of her Group 1 wins were in Sydney.
There have been three dual winners of the race in the past decade with: Skyerush (2012-13), Catkins (2014-15), and Zanbagh (2016-17).

In 2022 the Emancipation Stakes was moved from Rosehill on Saturday the 26th of March to Newcastle on Monday the 28th of March due to unsafe Heavy track conditions and rainfall.
