The Q22 News

$1.2 million Group 2 The Q22 (2200m) is a key feature race held on Stradbroke Handicap Day during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

2025 The Q22 Results

  • 1st: #4 Kovalica ($6.50)
  • 2nd: #5 New Endeavour
  • 3rd: #1 Fawkner Park

In a remarkable return to winning form, Kovalica secured a thrilling victory in the 2025 The Q22 results at Eagle Farm on Saturday, June 14, marking his first win in two years and showcasing his undeniable class.

The Chris Waller-trained five-year-old, ridden by Nash Rawiller, settled at the tail of the eight-horse field for the majority of the race. As the field straightened for home, a crucial decision to apply blinkers (made just days before the race) paid dividends, with Kovalica surging widest of all. In a pulsating three-way finish, he steadily gained ground on the leaders New Endeavour and Fawkner Park, ultimately lunging on the line to win by a short half-head.

This hard-fought victory, adding A$1.2 million to his earnings, has solidified Kovalica’s status as a top middle-distance contender.

While trainer Chris Waller hinted at a potential return to Queensland for future campaigns, owner Nev Morgan expressed his hope that Kovalica could even be a Melbourne Cup contender this year, noting the horse was only beaten by four lengths in the prestigious race last year.

It replaced the now defunct Eagle Farm Cup / PJ O’Shea Stakes. For the history of that race please click here.

The first official running of the revamped The Q22 race took place in 2021 and was won by odds-on favourite Zaaki. Zaaki went on to frank the form out of the inaugural The Q22 winning the Underwood Stakes – Mackinnon Stakes double that spring, and the The All-Star Mile (1600m) the following autumn in 2022.

In 2022 trainer Annabel Neasham enjoyed back-to-back The Q22 wins with Numerian scoring an upset at 20/1.

The Q22 is a 2200m staying race taking place at Eagle Farm Racecourse in mid-June on Straddie Day. The meeting is host to two elite level races with The Q22 the key support act to the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) and the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m).

Worth a lucrative $1.2 million in prize money, The Q22 is contested at weight-for-age and is part of the reinvented Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Previously the Group 1 Queensland Derby was also run on Stradbroke Handicap Day, but that 2400m feature now runs a fortnight earlier allowing the three-year-old stayers out of the Derby to also target the The Q22.

The Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) is the key lead-up into The Q22 field and Zaaki (2021) is the last horse to do the double.

The 2023 The Q22 form was firmly franked with the winner, Without A Fight, returning in the spring to complete the coveted Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup race double.

Annabel Neasham secured her third win in four years in the 2024 The Q22 with Fawkner Park saluting for the stable by nearly four lengths.

Fawkner Park went on to run a number of top three Group 1 placings over the next 12 months including in the 2025 Ranvet Stakes (3rd) and 2025 Doomben Cup (2nd).

The 2025 The Q22 ran on Saturday June 14, 2025 as part of the Stradbroke Handicap Day line-up at Eagle Farm and was won in a photo-thriller by the Chris Waller trained Doomben Cup third placegetter Kovalica ($6.50).
