2025 Ted Van Heemst Stakes Results

Stay tuned for the official 2025 Ted Van Heemst Stakes results and finishing order and to see what horses are Perth Cup bound this summer.

  • 1st: No. 1 Apulia ($2.50F)
  • 2nd: No. 10 Hoba West
  • 3rd: No. 4 Sentimental Hero

Winning Margin: 0.72 lengths

Winning Time: 2:08.93

Apulia ($2.50F) delivered a powerhouse performance to claim victory for the punters in the 2025 Ted Van Heemst Stakes results at Ascot on Saturday, producing a stunning last-to-first victory that stamped him as the horse to beat heading into the 2026 Perth Cup.

After settling dead last in the field of 11, jockey William Pike swung the Ben, Will and JD Hayes trained gelding to the outside and let him rip. Apulia unleashed a booming finish, mowing down Hoba West in the final strides to score impressively.

Pike admitted the race didn’t unfold as planned — he’d hoped to be much closer in the run — but Apulia’s turn of foot made the tactical mishap irrelevant.

The win now has him firmly on track for the $1 million Perth Cup (2400m) on New Year’s Day, where he is expected to start one of the major players.

2025 Ted Van Heemst Stakes Tips

Stay tuned for our insider Ted Van Heemst Stakes 2025 Tips on the Perth Cup lead-up in WA this summer.

Each Way: No. 10 Hoba West

HOBA WEST (4) is drawn a dream and comes into this acid test in top form.

An open edition of the Ted Van Heemst and the current price on Summer Dickson’s six-year-old Epaulette gelding is attractive for an Each Way play considering his lead-up runs.

Boasting a great record here at the Ascot track (5:2-2-0) he has won three of his past four starts and is deserving of a shot at something like this.

Up in distance but looks like he’ll run out the 2100m without too much of a stretch after carrying 60kg to a one-length win here over 1800m on December 13.

This is tougher and there’s some class horses in the mix down in grade looking to return to form, but I like this guy at WFA with Shaun O’Donnell coming aboard in another plus.

Can surprise a few late and finish in the money.

2025 Ted Van Heemst Stakes Field

The Ted Van Heemst / CB Cox Stakes field traditionally features the best locally trained stayers targeting the popular Perth Cup.

Horses in the Ted Van Heemst Stakes field come out of summer lead-up races including the Group 1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) – formerly the Kingston Town Classic – in early December or the previous Saturday’s Group 3 A.J. Scahill Stakes (1400m) over a notably shorter distance.

In 2019, Regal Power completed the Group 1 Railway Stakes – Ted Van Heemst Stakes double. Truly Great took out the Kingston Town Classic – Ted Van Heemst Stakes double in 2020 before Regal Power did the same in 2021.

Apulia (10th in 2025) was the last Northerly Stakes graduate to go on and win the Ted Van Heemst Stakes.

The 2025 Ted Van Heemst Stakes field & barriers will be provided here the week of the race once officially announced by Perth Racing.

The Ted Van Heemst Stakes 2025 final field features a dozen potential Perth Cup hopefuls including Lindsay Park’s Fiorente horse Apulia drawn the rails for Willie Pike and looking to atone for an unplaced run in the Northerly Stakes.

2025 Ted Van Heemst Stakes Nominations

Early nominations for the Ted Van Heemst Stakes in 2025 will be updated here the week of the race.

Ted Van Heemst / CB Cox Stakes History

Inaugurated in 1914 as the Grandstand Plate, the Ted Van Heemst Stakes was renamed in 2016 in honour of Western Australian Racing Hall of Famer Ted Van Heemst and was previously known as the CB Cox Stakes from 1920-2015.

The race was previously contested over 2400m but was reduced in 2009 after the Perth Cup distance was also cut from a traditional two-mile cup distance (3200m) to the mile and a half (2400m).

The Ted Van Heemst Stakes has held Group 2 status since 1979 and has been won by a number of notable stayers including Eurythmic (1920) who went on to win a host of interstate Group 1 races including the Caulfield Cup (1920), that year’s Melbourne Cup winner Piping Lane (1972), the reigning Cox Plate champion at the time Battle Heights (1974) and more recently Delicacy (2015) who won the following January’s Perth Cup.

The 2019 Ted Van Heemst Stakes winner Regal Power went on to win the following year’s $5 million The All-Star Mile in Melbourne. Regal Power also returned to complete the Kingston Town Classic – Ted Van Heemst Stakes double in 2021.
